Daniel David Smith, 75, of St. Joseph, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021, at Mosaic Life Care hospital brought on by his four month Covid battle. He was born Jan. 5, 1946, in Independence, Missouri, son of the late Frances and Daniel Smith. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School, Class of 1965.

Man gets 30 years in murder case

A man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in a 2020 murder case. Nicholas D. Piper, 33, received the sentence after previously pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of a neighbor. Piper stabbed the man in his chest multiple times in the victim’s apartment at 905 S. 14th St. at about 10 p.m. on April 26, 2020.

Weekend Crashes Involve Savannah/Rock Port Men

65 year old Denny E Porter of Rock Port crashed Friday night in Atchison County. Porter was eastbound on Highway 136, 2 miles west of Rock Port, when he traveled off the roadway. Porter struck a guardrail, traveled down an embankment and was submerged in water. He exited the vehicle prior to it submerging. Porter did not seek medical treatment.

Missouri Western State University lifts its mask mandate

Missouri Western State University has lifted its mask mandate. University officials had required masks to be worn while in indoor, public spaces on the St. Joseph campus during the fall semester. Missouri Western President Elizabeth Kennedy sent an email to the campus community late Friday afternoon, stating face coverings will be encouraged, but not required.

Iowa Driver Seriously Injured in I-35 Crash

An Iowa man sustained serious injuries in an accident on I-35 in Clinton County on Friday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports the crash took place at noon as two tractor trailers were northbound at the 52 mile marker. The Freightliner operated by 61-year old Indianola, Iowa resident James A. Paul struck the towed unit of a Kenworth operated by 49-year old Kaukuton Millien of Philidelphia, Pennsylvania. Both vehicles travelled off the east side of the roadway.

Savannah Man Injured In Single Vehicle Crash, Cited For DUI

49 year old Ryan L Evans of Savannah crashed Thursday night in Andrew County. Evans was westbound on Route V, 1 mile west of Helena, when he crossed the center line, traveled off the roadway, overturned and struck a fence. He was taken by Andrew County Ambulance to Mosaic Life Care in St Joseph. Evans was cited for driving while intoxicated.

David Forrest Stafford, 68, of St. Joseph, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. David was born Aug. 2, 1953, in St. Joseph, son of Mary and Forrest J. Stafford. He graduated from Benton High School, class of 1971. He married Karen Strong on May 21, 1984.

Almost 500 receive vaccine booster Friday

Nearly 500 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine booster were given out by Mosaic Life Care on Friday at East Hills Shopping Center. Around 3,000 qualified residents have shown interest in receiving the booster, Mosaic Internal Medicine Specialist Edward Kammerer said. There is no plan for a second booster clinic, but that could change in the future.
