Discover the Yogic Sciences

For many people today, the word “yoga” conjures up images of colorful mats, flexible bodies, and tight clothing. While these images may be great for posting on social media, they have little to do with actual yoga. In fact, yoga poses, or asanas as they are known in Sanskrit, are just a small part of the expansive system of yogic sciences that have been practiced for thousands of years. These sciences include the yamas and niyamas, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi. You may be wondering why these are sciences, and not simply practices: like other sciences, countless testing has led to a series of steps that when followed correctly produce a replicable result. In the case of yoga, the result is a state of enlightened living. In this state, not only does your own life benefit, but also those of all with whom you interact, both personally and professionally.

Learn More about Meditation Teacher Training

When we consider meditation and how we can integrate this practice into our daily lives, we would benefit from considering the plight of the modern meditator. Teaching meditation is a sacred art form. A navigation of the highways of our mental processes. We might assume that we think too much to be able to meditate. But what if our thoughts themselves were part of the portal for our access? What if we could befriend ourselves in meditation?

The Quest for Samadhi

Each scorching afternoon during the summer when I was 8 years old, I’d crawl into my favorite chocolate brown, fringe-bottomed easy chair and dive into a Nancy Drew novel. As I read about the daring exploits of my favorite heroine, I was transported to another time and place. I wouldn’t notice anything around me until I surfaced to find my mother standing near and realized she had been repeatedly calling me to dinner.

Keeping Up A Regular Yoga Practice Can Give Physical And Mental Well-Being Benefits

A 3,000 year old tradition, yoga, is now regarded in the Western world as a holistic approach to health and is classified by the National Institutes of Health as a form of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). The word “yoga” comes from a Sanskrit root ‘yog’ which means union, to join, and to direct and concentrate one’s attention. Regular practice of yoga promotes strength, endurance, flexibility and facilitates characteristics of friendliness, compassion, and greater self-control, while cultivating a sense of calmness and well-being. Sustained practice also leads to important outcomes such as changes in life perspective, self-awareness and an improved sense of energy to live life fully and with genuine enjoyment.

How Learning Sanskrit Can Help You Deepen Your Yoga Practice

Sanskrit is the oldest language in the world. Most Sanskrit “texts” are actually rhythmic chants memorized and passed down for thousands of years before writing was even invented! These texts are referred to as “shruti,” meaning “that which was heard.” Due to the complex nature of grammatical rules in Sanskrit the remaining shruti body of works have been perfectly preserved since time immemorial.

These Gorgeous Yoga Mat Holders Double as Home Décor

Few things cramp your style more than your sweat-stained, grimy yoga mat slowly unfurling from its tight roll in the corner of the room. And this unstoppable unfolding also means that the dirt, perspiration, and germs glued to it are now rubbing up against your freshly cleaned floor. The result: A situation that would most definitely make Raven Baxter call you "ya nasty."

How to Teach the Niyamas in a Yoga Class

Most modern yoga students learn asana first, often without any reference to the other essential limbs on the tree of yoga. But in classical yoga, yama and niyama come before asana on the Eightfold path. If you teach hatha yoga with a focus on the physical practice, there are ways to ground the teaching in classical philosophy. Here’s how to seamlessly incorporate the five niyamas into an asana class.

Alex Olson in Conversation with Yoga Teacher Kyle Miller

Yoga and skateboarding are very different, yet so very alike. Both practices require effort, focus, balance, and a desire for improvement. One of the key differences between yoga and skateboarding, however, is the instruction. Skateboarding instruction comes from watching and rewatching videos, and then going out to wage war on your own knees; whereas yogic instruction is delivered by a friendly, peaceful person who wants nothing more than to teach you how to love and appreciate your knees and every other part of your physical and spiritual being. One such teacher is Kyle Miller. Kyle has been teaching people to bend themselves into pretzels while smiling for well over a decade, and Jonah, one of her students, asked pro skater Alex Olson (also a student) if he wouldn’t mind interviewing her for this issue. He didn’t mind. Om Shanti.
