11 years after release, FF14 hits its highest-ever Steam player count

Final Fantasy 14 smashed its concurrent player record on Steam this weekend following the release of Endwalker, according to SteamDB. The game was originally released in late 2010 in a much-maligned state, what many now call the 'failed' version, before in 2013 a complete overhaul saw it become Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn: Since when, the only direction of travel has been upwards.

Do MMORPG Launch Queues Bother You?

Launch queues. They happen. A lot. Normally they happen when a new MMO or expansion drops and everyone rushes to start playing the new content, though as we've seen they can also happen when a game just gets really popular. It's something that many older MMORPG consumers have grown to just accept as "par for the course." But should we, and (putting on my best therapist's hat) how do they make you feel?

MMO Week in Review: Endwalker, ArcheAge, and turtle power

It was a helluva week here in the MMO genre, and it wasn’t just because Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker finally hit early access and was slammed with so many people that it saw outages and congestion resulting in compensation. It was also because ArcheAge was successfully rehomed with Kakao, Funcom’s DUNE MMO reared its head, Gamigo’s parent company invested in Daybreak’s parent company, EverQuest II launched its 18th expansion, New World planned an endgame gear revamp, and Activision-Blizzard kept on being terrible. Plus, we checked back in on Elite Odyssey, pondered the console future of LOTRO, and took a peek at Guild Wars 2’s siege turtle mounts.

Vitae Aeternum: New World’s travel problem is also a storage problem

Today, I’d like to discuss the recent change that increased the experience needed to level crafting in New World: It’s terrible, and it should be reversed. In fact, leveling crafting was already too slow before the patch. It should be made faster than it was then. Boom, problem solved, happy players, you’re welcome, Amazon.

Final Fantasy XIV offering free game time due to Endwalker server congestion

Final Fantasy 14’s Endwalker expansion adds level 90 dungeons, Tomestone Gear, and so much more — if you can actually get in to play it. There’s been some major bottle-necking with the popular MMO’s servers, leaving many of them at capacity for long periods. Fortunately, everyone will be compensated for their time.

How much does external media influence you to start a new game series or MMO?

“I loved Arcane, but I would never play League of Legends.” That particular opinion is one that I’ve heard a bunch of times recently — apparently, it resonates with lots of us. Arcane is a fantastic show, both critically-acclaimed and beloved by audiences everywhere. People are loving it — and craving more. But is that appreciation sufficient to make them actually consider playing the video game that started it all?

Crowfall’s CM: ‘If the game was going to shut down, we’d let you know’

It’s no secret that Crowfall didn’t exactly have the launch year that it wanted, with a subdued launch, subsequent layoffs, and low player counts (which the studio tried to hide) happening to this once-red-hot MMORPG project. We’ve been hoping that the PvP title would be able to find its footing and organically grow a playerbase over time with November’s freemium business model transition, but it may not get that breathing room to do more if the latest rumors are any measure.

Final Fantasy XIV Director Apologizes For Endwalker Queue Times, All Active Players To Get 7 Free Days

Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida has publicly apologized for the ongoing congestion issues occurring in the MMO due to the newest expansion, Endwalker. He also revealed that the team will give all active players and owners of Final Fantasy XIV seven days of game time for free to make up for the current queue times and congestion. This news comes after the early access release of Endwalker, which has seen players waiting hours to queue into the game. Many find themselves in the thousands in terms of their spot in queue lines, meaning there’s a large number of people that players must wait in line behind before they’re able to enter the MMO.

Final Fantasy XIV Players Get Free Week After Long Server Queues

Don’t worry, you’re not the only Final Fantasy XIV player struggling to login, but Square Enix is giving you a free week of game time to compensate. Final Fantasy XIV is a ridiculously popular game. Back in October it was reported that the MMO has over 24 million players. And it’s the most profitable Final Fantasy game ever. For a game that was received so poorly the entire in-game world was destroyed and rebuilt, it’s not doing too badly.
