Microsoft reveals redesigned, much faster Xbox store

Microsoft has announced a significant overhaul of its digital store for Xbox, and the end result is a much faster browsing experience and more straightforward navigation. “Far more than a typical app update, we’ve rebuilt the experience from the ground up to be faster, safer and easier to use than ever before,” wrote the Xbox team’s Cody Bird in a blog post.

As my colleague Chris Welch pointed out in his early review, the new storefront loads dramatically faster than its predecessor. It’s been “optimized for the era of Game Pass,” meaning it’s easier to see the differences between different versions of a game in the store, and there’s a new focus on parental controls.

Microsoft aims to grow Azure's footprint, resiliency with more availability zones and new services

Microsoft officials have been talking up over the past year the company's plans to try to provide greater Azure resiliency and capacity. Despite its moves, market analysis firm Gartner dinged Microsoft in its September 2020 Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure and Platform Services report for issues for "concerns related to the overall architecture and implementation of Azure." Gartner officials said Microsoft has the lowest ratio of availability zones to regions of any vendor in this category and noted that only a limited set of Microsoft services support the availability-zone model.

Microsoft Store announces new approach to retail

Microsoft to continue to support customers online, with retail team members working remotely and at Microsoft corporate locations. REDMOND, Wash. — June 26, 2020 — Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) (“Microsoft”) today announced a strategic change in its retail operations, including closing Microsoft Store physical locations. The company’s retail team members will continue to serve customers from Microsoft corporate facilities and remotely providing sales, training, and support. Microsoft will continue to invest in its digital storefronts on, and stores in Xbox and Windows, reaching more than 1.2 billion people every month in 190 markets. The company will also reimagine spaces that serve all customers, including operating Microsoft Experience Centers in London, NYC, Sydney, and Redmond campus locations. The closing of Microsoft Store physical locations will result in a pre-tax charge of approximately $450M, or $0.05 per share, to be recorded in the current quarter ending June 30, 2020. The charge includes primarily asset write-offs and impairments.
