Mexico goes on scoring spree vs. South Korea to reach Olympic semifinals

TOKYO — It took Mexico six tries to reach the semifinals of an Olympic soccer tournament. Now it can’t seem to stay away. With Saturday’s 6-3 rout of South Korea in Yokohama, El Tri is back in the final four for the second time in nine years, riding two goals from Henry Martin and two from Sebastián Córdova to a date with Brazil on Tuesday in Kashima, about 70 miles east of Tokyo, where an Olympic medal will be on the line.

Is Mexico best soccer team at 2021 Olympics? Cordova, Martin say bring on Brazil in semifinal

Brazil beware. There is no team at the men's Olympic soccer tournament that has looked as strong and played as consistently well as Mexico. And that's not hyperbole. Saturday's comprehensive 6-3 quarterfinal win over South Korea is the latest evidence that El Tri is a legitimate contender for the gold medal in Tokyo. The Mexicans are only two games away from it, with Brazil coming up next in Tuesday's semifinal (4 a.m. ET).

Mexico soccer advances into quarterfinals with 3-0 victory over South Africa

TOKYO — The last time Mexico advanced beyond the group stage of an Olympic soccer tournament, it won the gold medal. That was 2012 in London. El Tri is hoping history repeats itself in Tokyo after advancing to the knockout round for just the second time in a quarter-century with a 3-0 win over South Africa on Wednesday. The victory earned Mexico (2-1-0), which finished second in its group to unbeaten Japan, a quarterfinal date Saturday with South Korea.

Tokyo Olympics Men's Soccer: France, Germany, Argentina go home; Mexico, Brazil, Spain among quarterfinalists

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics group stage for men's soccer is in the books, and some big names have been eliminated with France, Germany and Argentina all heading home after underwhelming showings in Japan. All three finished third in their four-team groups to fall just short of the knockout phases, but none of them truly merited to advance based on their showings over three games. The host nation are the only team to have won all three of their fixtures and look one of the strongest sides heading into the latter stages.

Mexico pins its best gold-medal hopes on famed soccer team facing familiar pressure

TOKYO — WhenMexico stumbled home from the 2010 World Cup, its national team program wasn’t exactly in crisis. But it was close. El Tri had fielded an aging team in South Africa, one led by a 37-year-old goalkeeper, two 31-year-old captains and a 37-year-old striker. It made the London Olympics two years later an audition of sorts, with Mexico needing to get younger fast with another World Cup on the horizon.

Mexico vs. Japan odds, picks, predictions: Soccer expert reveals best bets for Tokyo Olympics 2021

The top teams in Group A will clash when Japan faces Mexico at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in Saitama, Japan, on Sunday. The winner will more than likely be assured a spot in the quarterfinals. The Japanese went 1-1-1 at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to place 10th after taking fourth at the London Olympics four years earlier. Mexico also had a disappointing Olympics at Rio de Janeiro, placing ninth after going 1-1-1 in the group stage. That was after having won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
