Giant sea bass are thriving in Mexican waters – scientific research that found them to be critically endangered stopped at the US-Mexico border

I was looking at the seafloor, focused on identifying fish species as I normally did when diving off of the California coast, when suddenly I felt something large above me. When I turned my head I saw a giant fish – more than 6 feet (2 meters) long – calmly interested in the air bubbles coming from my SCUBA regulator. This was 2016 and was my first encounter with a giant sea bass. I am a marine ecologist, and I study how international borders pose challenges for conservation and management efforts in the marine environment. Although there are no walls or...

A Local’s Guide to the Best Food in Rhode Island

When it comes to summer in New England, there’s really no place better than my home state of Rhode Island. I may be an extremely biased travel guide, but it’s true:. With over 400 miles of shoreline, the smallest state in the nation has no shortage of beaches. You can swing by the Tennis Hall of Fame for a match or plan an idyllic tailgate picnic at Newport Polo. Stroll down winding paths, wander under footbridges, or catch a gondola down three rivers to immerse yourself in Barnaby Evans' sculpture of 80 bonfires that light downtown Providence at Waterfire. None of that sounds appealing? You can always take a ferry to Block Island for a cocktail by the sea or venture to Watch Hill to scope out Taylor Swift’s mansion.

A Mexico-Inspired Rental Apartment Beautifully Handles a ‘Funky’ Layout

We independently select these products—if you buy from one of our links, we may earn a commission. I had previously lived in San Francisco for eight-plus years and I outgrew both my time and the physical spaces I had lived in there. I’m a self-proclaimed nature nerd and it made sense for me to live where I was already spending the majority of my time. So, I moved north across the Golden Gate bridge to be even closer to nature. I was drawn to this apartment for its location, views, and privacy. It’s tucked away on a quiet street and yet it’s only steps away from both restaurants/bars and beaches/trailheads. I half jokingly think that my mood is directly related to the quality of my surroundings and my proximity to nature; the closer I get to a salty sea breeze or an open trail, the more relaxed I feel. This apartment checked those boxes.
