BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – The first Chick-fil-A restaurant to open in Alabama nearly 50 years ago is closing. Jerry Cotney, who owns the restaurant at Brookwood Village mall in metro Birmingham, announced the shutdown in a social media post. He says the once-popular shopping venue is no longer thriving. The restaurant opened under another owner in 1974, just seven years after Truett Cathy launched the first Chick-fil-A at a mall in metro Atlanta.

A Clayton County hospital needs help identifying a patient

RIVERDALE, GA (CBS46)—A metro Atlanta hospital is asking for the public’s help in identifying a patient. According to a Southern Regional Medical Center representative, someone found a man in Fulton County on July 14. The man was transported to the hospital’s emergency room; however, officials do not have the man’s identity.

Masks required for metro Atlanta schools once classes begin

(ATLANTA, Ga.) As schools in the metro Atlanta area prepare to open for the new school year, many districts are making decisions on mask mandates. Atlanta Public Schools (APS) announced on Thursday that it will make masks mandatory for all students and employees at the start of the school year, which begins Aug. 5.

WILD GEORGIA: Eastern kingsnake gets special attention in Atlanta

If you see an Eastern kingsnake in metro Atlanta this summer, some Atlanta-based researchers want to know about it. It’s part of a “citizens science” project called Urban Kings in which folks are asked to report sightings of kingsnakes in the metro area. Bryan Hudson, a Clemson University graduate student, said he and his colleagues want to determine from the project “how wildlife either survive or are pushed out as development intensity continues” in urban areas such as fast-growing metro Atlanta.
