KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Ice skating is coming back to Market Square for the next five holiday seasons. The Knoxville City Council approved a contract with IRE Crown Rink to bring back the event, after it moved to the Civic Coliseum and was subsequently suspended in December 2020 due to COVID-19.
The 43rd annual Market Square Day festivities took place once again this year after being canceled in 2020, in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. Businesses of all kinds set up booths, selling food, clothing items, jewelry and handmade art, and organizations promoted their goals. SAN ANTONIO — Many San Antonians say coming to Historic Market Square is like stepping into another world. It started out as a place where vendors sold fresh produce, beef, wild turkeys, honey and of course, Texas pecans. At night, the famous "Chili Queens" would take over for the vendors and sell their steaming bowls of spicy chili.
Except for the mystery of how road race runners wound up off course, Market Square Day's temporary move to September was deemed a success. Normally held in June, Market Square Day and the 10K race were moved because of uncertainty about the pandemic and limits on crowd size during the planning stages of the event.
A new store, Rocket Fizz, has opened on Market Square, offering retro and international candy, retro and unique soft drinks, toys, posters and more. The franchise was founded in 2007 and opened its first store in 2009. Specifically the stretch between market square and the park, as well as the stretch of market street right next to the park. It would be fully pedestrianized, just closed off to cars. Supply trucks, vehicles for the farmers market, or food trucks would be allowed by permit. But personal automobiles would not be allowed. Emergency response vehicles the notable exception. Anyway, for the reasoning: Union Avenue and market street pointlessly divide market square and the park, and are generally useless for anything but the exceptions to pedestrianizing anyway. Usually held in June, it was forced to cancel last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Crowds came out for the 2021 event, which was slightly smaller and offered much of the same flavor that has brought people out since 1978.
