Seth Rogen got cast as Donkey Kong for a new Super Mario movie & Twitter went wild

If you didn’t catch it, a new animated Super Mario Bros. movie was announced yesterday, featuring an incredibly fun (and kind of weird) cast. The Suicide Squad Almost Included More Mario Bros. References

If that moment in The Suicide Squad when Harley Quinn dropped a Mario Kart joke stuck out to you, you aren't alone. During last night's livetweet of the movie, director James Gunn answered a question about the moment, revealing that at one point in the movie's life, there were more Super Mario Bros. references, which actually helped to contextualize the one that survived the editing process and ended up in the movie. Per a tweet from the director, it comes from deleted scenes in which Harley repeatedly referred to Coronel (Ray Benitez) and Teniente (Rey Hernandez) as "Mario and Luigi."

Super Mario Bros. movie reportedly casts Sebastian Maniscalco

When Nintendo officially announced it was making a Super Mario Bros. film with the studio behind Despicable Me and Minions, there were a lot of questions. The company only said that the film would be co-produced by Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Illumination's Chris Meledandri.

Rumor: Super Mario Bros. movie directors may have been revealed by employee’s LinkedIn page

With an expected release date of September 2022, Nintendo fans have been wondering how Nintendo and Illumination’s Super Mario movie is progressing. So, it’s not surprising to find fans searching through LinkedIn profiles to map out a production timeline. Nintendo has been tight-lipped about the project and the biggest piece of news concerning the movie slipped out in a podcast earlier this month. If comedian Sebastian Maniscalco randomly mentions he’s recording lines for Foreman Spike for the project, it’s not a wild theory that there could be other details hidden in plain sight. That’s why a “new discovery” is making the rounds today — and it names the film’s supposed directors.
