Covid vaccine and mask mandate bans in Florida and elsewhere raise cynical questions

On Tuesday, Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis named Dr. Joseph Ladapo the state’s next surgeon general. Lapado shuns mask and vaccine mandates while pushing unproven treatments popular with the far right, like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. Across the country, Republican leaders seem increasingly comfortable amplifying anti-vaccine rhetoric and conspiracies while banning...

The question Republicans still can’t really answer on vaccine mandates

About a week ago, the Miami Herald editorial board wrote a pretty prescient piece on the Florida GOP’s anti-vaccine mandate posture. It noted as others have that, despite Republicans “my body, my choice” stance, the state doesn’t really offer a choice about plenty of other vaccines, which are mandated. At...

Lee County School District adds to call for proviso repeal; now all tri-county districts want reversal on statewide mask mandate ban

School leaders in Lee County are joining the fight to convince state lawmakers to repeal an amendment in the state budget that prohibits mask mandates in schools. Lee County School District Board of Trustees introduced and unanimously approved a resolution on Thursday compelling the state's General Assembly to reconvene and repeal Proviso 1.108. The proviso states public school districts can't use state funds to implement mask mandates for students or staff. If any district goes against this condition, it risks losing state funding.

Opinion: The wrestle among believers about vaccine mandates

Amid the flurry of online back-and-forth since President Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate announcement, I came across comments last week from a nurse crestfallen about losing her job. She described working hard over the past 18 months to serve COVID-19 patients but admitted she hadn’t been able to feel comfortable taking the vaccine in good conscience. And so, she was about to be without a job.
