Carlsen-Nepo 8: Magnus lands killer blow

Magnus Carlsen now has a commanding 5:3 lead with just six games of the World Chess Championship to go after Ian Nepomniachtchi survived a shaky opening in Game 8 but then blundered a pawn in one move and collapsed almost immediately afterwards. What followed was just Ian going through the stages of grief. Magnus goes into the rest day having won twice in a row with the white pieces, leaving Ian with a mountain to climb even if he can now compose himself again.

FIDE World Championship Dubai 2021 Game 7: A tepid draw

After the game, Magnus was evidently happy to have drawn with the black pieces. Magnus played all thematic moves in this set up of Ruy Lopez opening. The seventh game of the FIDE World Chess Championship Match between the defending champion Magnus Carlsen and challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi ended in a draw at Dubai. It was a 'boring draw' as Ian described in the post-match press conference. It is quite understandable that both the players were quite tired after playing for over 7 hours 45 minutes on the previous day which finished after midnight.

There's no rest day, as the players play again on Saturday and Sunday.
