Stalled East Side Project To Resume

Work is expected to resume soon on the redevelopment of a Lower East Side office building into apartments. A zoning change request was submitted in 2019 to convert The Fenwick Building, 1442 N. Farwell Ave., to a 65-bed assisted living facility. And by 2020 construction work on the project was well underway.

Hannah Traore Gallery Opens in the Lower East Side

The inaugural exhibition “Hues” is on view now. New York’s Lower East Side added a new gallery space thanks to rising arts curator Hannah Traore. Having curated shows as a student at Skidmore College, Traore was heavily inspired by her father’s African heritage and sought to establish her namesake gallery as a space to champion creatives from marginalized communities.

Interval Coffee Will Open In Bay View

Interval plans to open a new cafe in Bay View at 2266 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. It will be the third cafe for the fast-growing coffee roaster and purveyor. Led by Ryan Hoban, the first cafe opened at 1600 N. Jackson St. in 2018. A second cafe, run in partnership with Milwaukee Artist Resource Network, opened in the Historic Third Ward last year.

On January 20th, the Hannah Traore Gallery made its debut on the Lower East Side at 15o Orchard Street. For Traore, art has always been an indelible connection to her family. From a young age, Traore was surrounded by the arts — her home is filled with pieces of traditional West African beading and woodwork collected by her mother to be sold in their hometown of Toronto. Stemming from her parent’s artistic endeavors, Traore participated extensively in the arts growing up, producing darkroom photography by the fourth grade, attending art camp with her siblings, and creating weekend arts and crafts projects in her family’s tile art room.

Mary Barrett was born on the lower east side of Manhattan in 1929 and grew up in Brooklyn. She and her family moved to Belmar in 1972. She worked as a bookkeeper for most of her life. Her greatest loves were cooking large meals for family get-togethers, working every summer at the Belmar Pavilion, and taking rides to Atlantic City with her husband of almost 60 years, John Joseph Barrett, who passed in 2017.

A 29-year-old man is in critical condition after being injured in a Lower East Side shooting on Sunday afternoon, according to police.
