Can You Break the Lease if Your Apartment Might Flood?

Q: I live in a Park Slope garden apartment with ongoing drainage issues. During hurricanes Henri and Ida, I was bucketing water away from the door, which leads to my bedroom. I bought a raised drain guard and a sump pump that hooks up to a garden hose, but the pump couldn’t keep up. Because I was home, the damage was limited. But what if a big storm hits when I’m not home? The management company told me to deduct the cost of the pump from the rent. But shouldn’t the landlord address the larger drainage issues?

With mineral lease money running out, Uintah County officials face difficult decisions

As mineral leases coming from the oil fields shrink, Uintah County officials make difficult decisions about funding services like fire and animal control. There are six special service districts in Uintah County that are funded almost entirely by lease payments: animal control, fire, damage control, public health, recreation, and transportation. This money comes from a percentage of the profits from the oil that is produced in the county. Over the past four or five years these funds have declined, and it’s difficult to predict how and when that will change.

Why auto leasing makes sense for your credit union in the ‘new normal’

We’ve been here before, except last time it was toilet paper and hand sanitizer: Today’s shortage is new cars, and the impact on consumers is far greater than hours-long checkout lines or upset shoppers in grocery store parking lots. Dealers simply don’t have enough cars to sell, prices are higher than ever and there are surprisingly few incentives to help defray the cost of a new auto purchase. According to Kelley Blue Book, in June 2021, the estimated U.S. average transaction price for a light vehicle was $42,258. That’s an increase of over $2,500 (6.4%) from a year ago.
