Churchill Downs valets will not strike during Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The valets who saddle the horses in the paddock and prepare them for races have decided to work the Kentucky Derby, despite considerations to strike. SEIU Local 541 issued a statement regarding the decision made late Friday, which says: “With the world’s eyes on the Kentucky Derby, we want to thank everyone for their support in the fight for livable wages, dignity, and respect for the valets at Churchill Downs. The valets have made the incredibly tough and selfless decision to put this event and the entire community above themselves, and the leadership of SEIU Local 541 respects that decision. The valets will continue to work the Kentucky Derby with the same commitment, passion, and dedication that they always have, and this union will continue to support them in their pursuit of a fair and just contract.”

Kentucky Derby returns along with the fanfare

The Kentucky Derby is back in May with fancy hats and mint juleps. The 147th running of the event will start Saturday evening and come less than eight months after it went off without spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will be the shortest time between derbies in the event’s history.

Tyson Fury's namesake, King Fury, scratched from Kentucky Derby with high fever

King Fury, the 20-1 horse named after lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, has been scratched from Saturday's Kentucky Derby. King Fury's trainer, Kenny McPeek, tweeted the horse spiked 104 degree fever with an elevated white count on Friday afternoon after a galloping session in the morning, leading to the decision to pull King Fury from the race.
