A New Neighborhood Italian Restaurant

The Italian osteria can be traced as far back as the 14th and 15th centuries. Originally a neighborhood place serving wine and simple food, in more recent times the emphasis has shifted more to the food—typically local specialties such as pasta and grilled meat or fish often served at shared tables. The proprietors of BOSA Food & Drink, a brand-new establishment on Bend's west side, are referring to their place as an osteria, or as they further explain, a "neighborhood joint."

Antica Brings Contemporary Italian Food to the MarketPlace at Avon

Cafe Piccolo, a popular Italian restaurant in Avon, closed its doors after three years at the start of the pandemic. Another business, Flair 22, announced plans soon after to take the space over but never made it to opening day. In January, Heck’s owner Fadi Daoud signed the lease and spent the next six months updating the space in advance of opening Antica Italian Kitchen (35568 Detroit Rd., 440-517-0096), which he did in mid-July.

President Biden’s Favorite Foods

During Donald Trump’s presidency, much was written about his eating habits — his love for well-done steak, Egg McMuffins, and chocolate cake; the $5,500 fast-food feast he served the Clemson Tigers at the White House; his “I love Hispanics!” Trump Grill taco bowl; the Diet Coke panic button at his fingertips in the Oval Office….

Best of the Best 2021: Italian

Order the pork chops, my dad insisted before I could even open the menu. It’s the signature entrée at Castelli’s Ristorante, the traditional Tuscan-style restaurant that’s beginning its 33rd year in Palm Desert. His suggestion was tempting, considering the chops marinate all day in fresh herbs and seasonings before being charbroiled and served with a sherry wine glaze and caramelized apples. But the seafood lover in me opted for the Linguine di Mare — a deep and decadent dish filled with tender baby calamari, lobster, shrimp, scallops, fennel, and diced green onions in marinara sauce over imported pasta.

A rollicking and fancy Italian dinner in a bleak part of town

I hadn’t ventured downtown since the before times, but recently the lure of our urban environment called me to indulge in a fancy Italian dinner in the fashion district. It was still light out as we threaded our way past Disney Hall’s gleaming undulating walls and 7th Street’s vibey storefront eateries. Suddenly, civilization gave way to streets filled with discount goods and warehouses, then block after block of tents and dented lawn chairs.
