Iron Bowl 2021: No. 3 Alabama Wants to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive; Auburn Wants Upset

The 2021 Iron Bowl won’t decide the SEC West as had been predicted a few weeks ago, but both No. 3 Alabama and unranked Auburn still have plenty on the line. Alabama (10-1, 6-1 SEC) hopes to keep its playoff hopes on track. Alabama hasn’t won at Jordan-Hare Stadium since 2015, but it is a nearly three-touchdown favorite. The Crimson Tide has already clinched the SEC West and will play top-ranked Georgia in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta on Dec. 4.

Alabama's Jameson Williams ejected for targeting vs. Auburn football on punt return

The No. 2 Alabama football team will be without wide receiver Jameson Williams for the rest of the 2021 Iron Bowl against Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday. With the Crimson Tide and Tigers tied 0-0 in the second quarter, Williams was ejected for targeting Auburn punt returner Ja'Varrius Johnson. On the possession following the penalty, Auburn scored a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.

Final thoughts (and a prediction) for the 2021 Iron Bowl

I had hope that going into this game, Auburn would be 9-2, and it would be essentially an SEC West title game. That hope faded faster than you could say “rat poison.”. Three consecutive Auburn losses turned a potential 2017 repeat into a 4th consecutive season without a New Year’s 6 Bowl. Instead of talking about the division title game, an Auburn team without Bo Nix is now reeling, having lost consecutive double-digit leads to the likes of Mississippi State and South Carolina.

Plainsman Picks: Iron Bowl 2021

Before the Iron Bowl kicks off later today, read about what some of our staff and a guest picker had to predict about the game:. "It's no secret that Auburn has not been playing its best football lately. And if Auburn is not at its best, the chance of taking down Alabama is thrown out the window. I think the magic of Jordan-Hare Stadium keeps it closer than expected, but Auburn still falls by double digits."

Behind Enemy Bylines: The Iron Bowl

Ahead of Saturday's game between Auburn and Alabama, The Plainsman's Caleb Jones spoke with The Crimson White's Ashlee Woods to talk about the matchup. Here's some questions that Woods answered about Alabama. Jones: Why do you think this Alabama team has not been nearly as dominant over opponents as year...

Bowl projections for Auburn entering Iron Bowl

Three weeks ago, Auburn was in the thick of a competitive race in the SEC West. Now, heading into the final week of the regular season, the Tigers are trying to hang on. Since becoming bowl eligible with an 11-point win against Ole Miss on Oct. 30, Auburn has fallen on hard times. The Tigers are 0-3 in November and enter the Iron Bowl at 6-5 overall. They’ll need to upset No. 2 Alabama -- a 21-point favorite this weekend -- to finish the season above .500 and avoid a losing record in SEC play for the first time since 2018.
