Hurricane Ida barreling toward US, may approach Gulf Coast as Cat 4 storm

Hurricane Ida, after making two landfalls over western Cuba later during the day on Friday, was barreling into the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. AccuWeather forecasters warned that Ida, headed over exceptionally warm waters, was likely to rapidly intensify and approach the U.S. coast as Category 4 hurricane. Meteorologists warned residents along the central Gulf Coast that time is running out to prepare for the storm or evacuate the storm's projected path.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST: Hurricane Ida moving across the Gulf, rapid strengthening likely until landfall

Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) - The big story remains Hurricane Ida with major impacts ahead to the state of Louisiana. As of 1 p.m. Ida is located in the Gulf, 290 miles south-southeast of the Mouth of Mississippi River and has winds of 100 mph and Ida is moving northwest at 16 mph. Ida is moving over the very warm waters of the Gulf and will likely strengthen quickly through Sunday. In fact, the National Hurricane Center shows Ida making landfall as a very dangerous category 4 hurricane. Thankfully the track has not changed much at all and likely will remain just east of Southwest Louisiana.

NEW ORLEANS — As of 1 p.m Saturday, Hurricane Ida is rapidly intensifying over the open Gulf waters. It is located 290 Miles SSE of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The forecast track remains the same with a landfall in lower Terrebonne Sunday evening as a major category 4 storm.
