The Power of Cards In Horror

Last year’s Inscryption caught the attention of many gamers, and for good reason. Created by Daniel Mullins (responsible for other titles like Pony Island and The Hex), Inscryption makes for a bizarre, creepy, and captivating game – all which is presented through intriguing mechanics. Because while the mystery-laden narrative and horror vibes were some of the qualities that drew me to it, what really caught my attention was that of the card game mechanics.

Firework review: a gentle horror-puzzle game that's as thoughtful as it is sad

A horror puzzle game whose horror isn't too horrifying and puzzles aren't too puzzling, but it delivers a creepy, thoughtful and interesting experience all the same. Firework actually came out almost exactly a year ago, but the English language version (translated from the original Chinese) was released just before Christmas. Which is a good thing, because Firework is well worth checking out if you have an interest in either horror games or puzzle games. The horror isn't blood-chilling, but rather twisted up with grief and sorrow in how inevitable it is. Similarly, the puzzles aren't going to stump you for long, but they fit very well with the story. These two strands of the game weave together and create a nice, thoughtful experience that's worth the four or so hours of having it.

Slitterhead is a New Horror IP by Silent Hill Creator

With a new Silent Hill game nowhere to be seen for this coming generation, the next best thing is to introduce a whole new IP from creator Keiichiro Toyama called Slitterhead. This is a new survival-horror title from new indie developer Bokeh Game Studio. This game is currently an enigma for many gamers out there and, needless to say, it has piqued some interest. There’s not an awful lot of information to glean with this new game, but it’s a sure bet that it will provide the same chills that the Silent Hill games are known for. However, Toyama is trying out a new angle to horror by introducing a new threat called the Yakushi. Evidently, the Yakushi is some kind of creature that can disguise itself as a human and perfectly mimic them. Based on stories from the theatre during ancient times, the Yakushi has been a prevalent presence throughout many plays. For whatever reason, it never really reached other mediums until now.
