Hollywood’s Beloved 101 Coffee Shop from ‘Swingers’ Is Set to Re-Open This Fall

Hollywood locals breathed a collective sigh of relief last week when news of the 101 Coffee Shop’s reopening hit Instagram. The beloved and oft-filmed café, most notable for its appearance in the 1996 indie hit “Swingers,” shut its doors in March 2020 as a result of the pandemic, along with countless other eateries across the globe. But while many of those have since re-opened, the 101’s doors remained locked, and at the start of 2021 owner Warner Ebbink released a statement saying, “The temporary closure of the 101 Coffee Shop has become permanent.” Not the New Year’s news its legions of regulars had been hoping for. So the recent announcement that Zack Hall would be re-branding the site as the Clark Street Diner was met with glee.

Frank Llloyd Wright’s Freeman House

Completed in 1925, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Freeman House is widely considered of his most important designs. It’s situated in the Hollywood Hills with sweeping views of the Los Angeles and the LA Basin and is constructed from 12,000 textured concrete blocks. The textile design is exposed on both the exterior and the interior and is one of just four projects by Wright to feature the ornate blocks. Commissioned by Samuel and Harriet Freeman, the house served as a salon space for entertaining and includes a hearth, semi-open kitchen, two bedrooms, and multiple outdoor terraces and roof decks. In 1986, the couple donated the property to the University of Southern California. It’s being sold with many of the original furnishings, but new owners will need to prepare for an extensive restoration.

Balthazar Getty Gets $8.4 Million for Hollywood Hills Home

Actor, DJ and oil heir Balthazar Getty, great-grandson of oil baron J. Paul Getty — The Getty Museum is named after his family, of course — and fashion designer Rosetta Millington Getty have, after more than half a decade on and off the market, sold their longtime contemporary compound perched on a high, flat ridge near the top of L.A.’s Nichols Canyon. The sale price, per online records, is $8.4 million, a small fortune below the wildly optimistic $10.5 million wanted when they first set it out for sale in 2015 but still almost four times the $2.15 million paid for the property in 2003.
