Developer happily preserves city's heritage with downtown project

There is a lot of “new” coming to downtown Owatonna, but the developer behind the planned hotel and apartments projects is making sure nobody forgets the past. In last month, the Jerry’s Supper Club sign was stripped from its North Cedar Avenue perch along with the white wood paneling that had signified the iconic downtown restaurant since its 1960 opening. After the restaurant was shuttered in 2009, the paneling continued to serve as a reminder of a local favorite.

Luckily for us, many historic buildings in Dover still exist today and offer a glimpse into the making of the American experiment.

Courthouse slated to contribute to local economy

At a specially called meeting in June, the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners heard the recommendations of the committee assigned to evaluate potential uses of the Lincoln County Courthouse which will be vacated in 2022. Due to its advanced age and the need for more security and technological upgrades, its use as a courthouse is almost over. Because of its historical significance, tearing the courthouse down is not an option. Leaving it vacant with continued maintenance being done at the expense of the county was not an option nor is outright selling it to whomever will pay the asking price.
