The Last Mountain, review: a piercing examination of one family's double grief

Imagine the pain of losing your mother when you are a young child and then growing up to lose your brother in the same circumstances. Kate Ballard was four when her mother, the famous climber Alison Hargreaves, died on K2 in 1995. Her brother, Tom, inherited his mother’s passions and pursued the same career; with a horrible inevitability he died in 2019 while climbing another Himalayan mountain, Nanga Parbat. Neither body has been recovered and so they remain there, just 100 miles apart.

It’s mid-September and the Himalayan balsam is on the march. A band of volunteers has gathered in the little wild wetland that our group looks after. The railway embankment along one side is brimming over with pink and white flowers. They float above the brambles, froth along the pathways and decorate the streamside. It’s an absolute nightmare.
