Backyard Medicine

A few summers ago, I was helping my mom garden some of the beds in the back of her house when we stumbled upon something that looked too amazing to be true. A gorgeous Reishi mushroom was growing on the stump of a hemlock tree underneath the fence between her and her neighbor’s yard!

My Foodie Luv: Four (4) Medicinal Flowers and Plants

Learning about the medicinal uses and benefits of flowers and plants has become a new passion for me. It grew out of concern for not only my own health and well-being but mainly the health and wellness of some of my children. Some of them do not like going to the doctor and prefer to search out natural remedies for whatever is ailing them. My late mother rarely went to see a doctor. She believed in herbal medicine and treated herself as much as she could before finally being persuaded to seek the advice of a medical professional. I have to say that many times her natural remedies really did work. Unfortunately, I did not pay attention to the various concoctions she used to mix when I was growing up and so none of her knowledge was transferred to me.

The Covaxin Vaccine, a Medscape Review of Ivermectin, and Herbal Medicine Bias

Several people have recently asked me about the Covaxin vaccine. Before I share my opinion and review of the research, I want to emphasize the utmost faith I have in botanical and nutritional medicine as the foundation for health and for supporting our innate capacity to live in harmony with our ever-evolving environment. This includes the viruses and other microbes we come into contact with.

Rochester’s “Frontier Medicine Woman”

There was a certain logic to some of the home remedies prescribed by Mary Ann Alexander Eastlick back in the 1870s, when Rochester—with roughly 5,000 residents—was just outgrowing its frontier status. Mary Ann, who had no formal medical training, was probably Rochester’s foremost practitioner of herbal medicines for treating a...

How often do I need to get acupuncture treatments? (and other common curiosities about the course of treatment)

The goal of any acupuncturist is to get you out of their clinic– and hopefully shouting from the rooftops about how your pain went away or that you haven’t slept this well since you were a teenager or one of the other 10,000 benefits of treatment. In order to get you out of our clinic and back into your life (and sending all your friends and family our way), we’ll ask you to commit to a consistent course of treatment for a specific length of time, and then we’ll re-evaluate along the way. You can expect a course of treatment to involve getting acupuncture once or twice a week, some lifestyle or movement coaching, and, when appropriate, a custom herbal prescription.

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis and Aging Vs. Traditional Chinese Medicine

As previously stated, menopause is a turning point in a women’s life, a rite of passage that will commence the next step. Indeed, menopause itself has multiple symptoms that can be treated with herbs. Furthermore, using herbs from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is considered an alternative treatment for osteoporosis since most current treatments rely on hormone therapy, bisphosphonates, selective estrogen receptor modulators, etc. Nevertheless, these treatments can have secondary effects leading to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, breast, and endometrial cancer, gastrointestinal intolerances, to mention some. On the other hand, using herbs from TCM exerts therapeutic effects through a multi-component, multi-pathways, and multi-targeted way, according to postmenopausal osteoporosis physiopathology.

Opportunities For Technological Upgradation To Drive The Medicine Market

Persistence Market Research states that the Traditional Chinese Medicine Market will witness an exaltation between 2020–2030. The outbreak of Covid-19 has resulted in almost the entire world going for a toss. The healthcare vertical has witnessed maximum turbulence, as healthcare personnel are, on one hand, trying their ways out to combat Covid-19, and, on the other hand, are into a continuously servile mode to address patients with chronic ailments, so that they do not contract Covid-19. On these grounds, though surgeries have taken a back seat (except the critical ones), demand for home care settings has skyrocketed in wake of partial/total lockdowns being enforced. This scenario is expected to continue for quite some time. However, mid-2021, the situation could improve with the probable onset of Covid-19 vaccine.

What You Should Know About Acupuncture

Chances are you've heard of acupuncture. The world of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is far richer than just getting poked with needles and meditating. Though TCM is widely practiced, it remains somewhat esoteric in the states (via Mayo Clinic). It is, however, well regulated, so you can rest assured knowing that your practitioner has been through rigorous training to earn their credentials.
