Lessons From HBO Max’s First Year

It’s been a year for HBO Max, both literally and figuratively: The platform turns one year old today, and the last 12 months have been, well … eventful. Debuting amid a global pandemic was never going to be easy, but Max lived up to its moniker by producing the maximum amount of drama. There was that early and very confusing nonsense over the naming of various HBO products; an uninspired launch marketing campaign; COVID-related delays of tentpole shows such as The Flight Attendant and Gossip Girl; and the nasty battle with Roku and Amazon that kept the app unavailable to millions of potential subscribers for months. As if all that weren’t enough, the behind-the-scenes C-suite drama was like a scene out of Succession, culminating a few weeks ago with AT&T deciding to basically sell Max parent company WarnerMedia to Discovery Networks and exit the streaming business altogether.

HBO Max Executive Talks Godzilla vs Kong’s Big Win, Piracy, and The Future

HBO Max is officially one year old, and let’s just say the last 365 days haven’t always been easy. WarnerMedia’s streaming service has seen highs and lows. Deciding to release new movies on HBO Max the same day they’re in theaters helped bring new subscribers to the streaming platform that was failing to grow as fast as executives may have wanted. At the same time, however, those moves made Hollywood A-listers angry, and WarnerMedia reportedly had to spend $200 million in backend deals to make up for it.

Evil Dead Rise Is Heading Straight To HBO Max

The new Evil Dead film, Evil Dead Rise, will head straight to HBO Max. Franchise creator Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell will executive produce, with Lee Cronin directing. Campbell will not be appearing in the film, according to the Variety article that broke the HOB Max news. "The next chapter in the saga builds off the original trilogy rather than the 2013 reboot. Evil Dead Rise moves the action out of the woods and into the city. The twisted tale centers on two estranged sisters, portrayed by Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable."
