Hawaii has looked like anything but a tropical oasis this week. The archipelago has been socked by a potent storm that has unleashed pounding rainfall, high winds and even blizzard conditions to the mountain summits. The state’s Big Island has taken some of the worst impacts thanks to “catastrophic flooding” after 2 feet of rain fell in some areas.

More than a foot of rain fell in some areas. A tree fell on a water tank supplying 250 homes. Thousands were without power. Homes were flooded, roads blocked by mudslides and water and power knocked out to parts of the Hawaiian Islands after a seasonal storm system known as a Kona low dumped more than a foot of rain on some areas from Sunday night into Tuesday.

Honolulu — From the empty shores of Oahu's Waikiki Beach to the snowy summit of the Big Island's highest peak, an unusually strong winter storm was clobbering the Hawaiian Islands on Tuesday and raising the threat of dangerous flash floods, landslides and crashing tree limbs. The strong storm over the nation's only island state left eloping couples without weddings and tourists stuck indoors.
Punishing rains over the Hawaiian islands have produced gusty winds and flash flooding throughout the state, with weather warnings still in effect as of Tuesday morning. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said the weather had knocked out power and cut off access to some roads, though there were no storm-related deaths as of 2 p.m. local time on Monday. Still, officials warned the storm, which began over the weekend, remained a threat.
