‘Happy hour’ should change with the times (Editorial)

A recent poll from MassInc. indicated 70% of Massachusetts residents support ending “happy hour” bans on alcoholic drinks at bars and restaurants. The ban has been in place for about four decades. Happy hour bans exist in Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah, and Vermont.

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new poll from MassINC showed that 70% of Massachusetts residents are in favor of bringing back happy hour in the state. State Rep. House Speaker Ron Mariano says he is open to the idea of debating a reversal of the commonwealth’s ban on the once popular drink promotions, but stopped short of endorsing the idea. The Legislature voted to ban Happy Hours in 1984 after a number of drunk driving accidents. Governor Baker is not expected to support such a bill if it makes it to his desk.
