Good Girls Ending Explained: Why Annie's Series Finale Fate Actually Makes Sense

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD for the series finale of Good Girls on NBC. The fourth and final season of Good Girls came to an end with a finale that really didn't feel like a finale for Beth, Annie, and Ruby, even if it did deliver the payoff of Beth ending up in charge with Rio working under her. But when it comes to Annie, her ending feels more like the beginning of a juicy new story that would be continued in Season 5, back before the news of the show's unexpected cancellation. Annie was arrested, despite all signs pointing toward Beth being the one heading to the clink. I actually was confused about the Annie twist at first, but the breadcrumbs are there to explain her ending.

In “We’re Even,” the Secret Service forces the girls into a heist, while Ruby (Retta) tries to mend things between Beth and Stan (Hendricks, Reno Wilson). In “Nevada,” Beth and Rio (Manny Montana) form a surprise alliance without anticipating the shocking consequences of that partnership. Ruby makes a tough decision, and reality finally catches up with Annie (Whitman).

Good Girls' Renewal Was All But a Done Deal — So What the Heck Happened?

In late May, word began circulating that NBC had unofficially signed off on a plan to renew bubble dramedy Good Girls for a shortened fifth and final season, one that would give fans something that has become increasingly elusive in the broadcast-TV landscape: closure. All three of the series’ leading ladies — Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman and Retta — agreed to take pay cuts to return for a reduced eight-episode swan song. Production was tentatively set to begin in Spring 2022. It was, for all intents and purposes, a done deal.

Good Girls Recap: As the Agents Go Rogue, Beth Scrambles for Leverage

If you were a professional gangbanger hired to take out a mark, why would you leave behind a likely incriminating, sealed envelope made out to a Secret Service agent? It was right there on the table, in the very kitchen that Good Girls‘ tattoo-faced Mick nuked up his saucy bowl of Chef Boyardee! He had to have seen it, he was standing right there!
