West Virginia’s Reliance On Out-Of-State Group Homes Leaves Some Foster Kids In Unsafe, Abusive Situations

This story was originally published by Mountain State Spotlight. In early 2015, West Virginia state inspectors visited an all-boys group home in Grove City, Pennsylvania. There were West Virginia foster kids living at the facility about an hour north of Pittsburgh; they, along with hundreds of others, were sent to homes outside West Virginia because the overburdened foster care system couldn’t care for all its kids in-state.

Editorial: Dogs are on the agenda in the Texas Legislature, but not foster kids

Most parents don’t take kindly to disapproving glares or unsolicited parenting advice from other parents, knowing that no family is immune to occasional tantrums, injuries and sassy disobedience. But few moms and dads would take advice from a parent whose toddler is dirty with matted hair, protruding ribs, pocked with...

Youth in foster care need your help

The Rural Alliance for Diversity (RAD) is hosting an informational event on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. to address the critical shortage of foster care providers in Harney County. The foster care system is meant to provide safe and healthy homes for children and youth, but our local child welfare services currently have to rely on counties as far away as the Portland Metro area to find homes for all youth in need. These remote placements can break any positive social connections children have within their communities and exacerbate the trauma of foster care.
