Giants ride the eternal power of the stolen first base to glorious victory

My least favorite rule in all of baseball, above even the free runner in extra innings, is the stolen first base on a strikeout. I understand the arguments from proponents of the rule. The play isn't over if the ball isn't caught (which conveniently ignores that the play still isn't over when the catcher picks up the ball), a pitcher should be punished for throwing a bad pitch, there needs to be a conclusion to the play, blah blah blah.

Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Working out at first base

Alvarez has been working out at first base, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Houston manager Dusty Baker said Alvarez "is not yet ready" to start a game there, but if he could provide competent defense there, it would improve the manager's ability to manager the roster. The Astros are currently missing Yuli Gurriel (neck), which leaves them a player short. Additionally, the team could use Alvarez at first base in National League cities.

Carlson went 3-for-5 with two double, a run scored, one RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's 7-3 victory over the Twins. Carlson singled and recorded his first base of the season in the first inning. He later doubled in a run and came around to score in the third. The 22-year-old outfielder is now sporting a .754 OPS with 23 doubles and 44 RBI this season. Carlson has four multi-hit games over his last 12 appearances, going 14-for-49 (.286) during that span.

Red Sox will give Kyle Schwarber ‘a look’ at first base

Kyle Schwarber was the Red Sox’s biggest addition at the trade deadline. The slugger helps fill a need in Boston’s lineup as a power-hitting left-handed hitter. Schwarber’s got 25 homers this season, which would be the second-most on the Red Sox, and has a .340/.570/.910 slash line that helped him earn his first All-Star nod this season.
