9-24-21 fdl covid relief money survey

Public comments to an online survey on how the city of Fond du Lac should use federal COVID relief money continue to roll in. The city of Fond du Lac is deciding how to use its portion of the American Rescue Plan Act funding and is asking residents, businesses and community organizations to provide feedback. City Manager Joe Moore says so far the city has received a little over 13 hundred public comments. The online survey is available on the city of Fond du Lac website. Postcards were also mailed to residents.

9-24-21 fdl county public health officer saddened by news of death of police officer

The Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer says she was saddened to learn about the death of a young Fond du Lac police officer due to COVID-19. Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says the death of 26 year old officer Joseph Kurer is so sad for the community. “Just seeing his picture and hearing his story I get choked up,” Mueller told WFDL news. “This was a very young, vibrant individual, 26 years old. Has a wife and two kids and now his life is over. It is extremely sad.”

9-25-21 fdl county sheriff’s deputy rescues two people from burning home

Nobody was injured in a fire that destroyed a home in Fond du Lac County. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Sergeant Logan Will says shortly before 2pm Friday a sheriff’s deputy was on patrol on Highway 26 near Willow Creek Road when he noticed the fire and rescued two people trapped inside the house. Will says the deputy had to break a window to get inside. Firefighters from several departments were called to the scene. Will says the fire destroyed the house. He says a lawnmower parked next to the house apparently started on fire and the fire spread to the house. Highway 26 was closed between Highway 151 and County Highway TC.

Memorial fund set for FdL officer who died of COVID

A memorial fund has been set for a Fond du Lac police officer who died this week from COVID-related complications. The police department says Officer Joseph Kurer is the second law enforcement officer in the state to die of COVID-19 contracted in the line of duty. His death on Wednesday came a day after his wife gave birth to their second child.

9-23-21 fdl police officer dies from covid-19

Funeral arrangements are pending for a Fond du Lac police officer who has died from COVID-19. Police Chief Aaron Goldstein says officer Joseph Kurer was 26 years old and had been with the department since August 2018. Kurer was a member of the Tactical Field Force Team, Honor Guard Unit, Domestic Violence Intervention Team, and earlier this year was certified as a Field Training Officer. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s Springs Academy. Officer Kurer is being escorted from the hospital to the funeral home by a law enforcement procession and Officers will stand vigil by his side until the services are complete. Officer Kurer is survived by his wife and two children, one born the night before he passed away. He is also survived by his parents and sister. Chief Goldstein said, “Our entire Fond du Lac Police Department family mourns the passing of Officer Joseph Kurer. Our love and condolences go out to Joseph’s wife and children and all those with whom he served. We, as a police department family will do everything possible to continue to provide support and comfort to Joseph’s family. Joseph will be missed by everyone here.”

9-22-21 fdl school board appoints two new board members

The Fond du Lac School Board has two new members. The Board has appointed Todd Schreiter and Brittany Hoerth to fill the vacancies created by the resignations of Mark Strand and Nick Tiefke. Both Schreiter and Hoerth ran unsuccessfully for the school board in the last election. The board interviewed 11 candidates before making their selections at a meeting Tuesday night.

9-23-21 man critically injured in fdl bicycle crash

Fond du Lac police are investigating how a bicyclist was critically injured Wednesday morning. Shortly before noon Wednesday rescue personnel were called to North Military Road and Sibley Street for a report of a middle aged man on the ground bleeding. When paramedics arrived on the scene a St. Agnes Hospital emergency room physician was already there providing initial care. The victim was flown by helicopter to ThedaCare Medical Center in Neenah.

9-24-21 walk to end alzheimer’s-fdl county

Fond du Lac area residents are walking next month in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s-Fond du Lac County will be held Saturday October 2 at Moraine Park Technical College. Dan Weidert says he started volunteering after watching his mom suffer from the disease for many years. 9-24-21 fdl police chief says officer who died from covid-19 contracted virus while on duty

The Fond du Lac Police Chief says all evidence indicates a police officer who died this week from COVID-19 contracted the virus while on duty. Chief Aaron Goldstein made the statement in a Facebook post. Twenty six year old officer Joseph Kurer died Wednesday at Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee. Goldstein says the death is being treated as a line of duty death, the second COVID-19 line of duty death in Wisconsin. Meanwhile a memorial fund has been established at the National Exchange Bank for Kurer’s children.

9-23-21 fdl ethics board meeting

Yet another Fond du Lac Ethics Board meeting has been scheduled. The Fond du Lac Ethics Board is scheduled to meet October 1 in closed session to discuss an ethics complaint filed against an individual who has not been identified. The Ethics Board has considered multiple complaints over the past year. So far the Board has found probable cause and a violation in only one of the complaints against councilmember Ben Giles for seeking outside legal counsel against the advice of the city attorney regarding a Lakeside Park matter. Giles is appealing that finding.

9-20-21 fdl man arrested following domestic incident

Nobody was injured and a Fond du Lac man is in custody following a domestic incident. Shortly after 7pm Sunday police were called to a West Scott Street residence for a report that a 33 year old Fond du Lac man was threatening to harm the victim with a knife. When police arrived the suspect had fled. His vehicle was later located in the area of Donahue Court. The SWAT Team was called. After negotiations failed, the SWAT Team used an explosive breach and OC munitions and the suspect s urrendered without further incident.

9-21-21 free mobile covid-19 testing in fdl county

Free mobile COVID-19 testing for all Fond du Lac County residents ages two and older starts this week. Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says the Health Department is partnering with Accelerated Clinical Laboratories to provide the mobile testing in Rosendale and Fond du Lac starting Tuesday. Testing will be held from noon to 5pm Tuesdays at the Rosendale Community Center and Thursdays at the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds. The testing is free and no appointment is necessary.

9-22-21 weather related crashes in fdl county

Fortunately there were no serious injuries were reported in two separate weather-related crashes in Fond du Lac County Monday night. Sheriff’s captain Bill Tadych says heavy rain appears to be a factor in crashes on Ashford Drive and another crash on Interstate 41 near Highway 151. “One individual in the town of Auburn struck a tree,” Tadych said. “There was a semi on 151 and 41 that lost control and went into the ditch.”
