Groups Petition to Relist Gray Wolf as Endangered Species

(NAFB) – Last week, a coalition of 70 groups filed a formal petition with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to re-list the gray wolf on the Endangered Species Act. The gray wolf has been protected under the Act since 1978, and since then, wolf populations have risen in several states, including California, Illinois, Minnesota, and many others. That means management of wolf populations would return to the states.

Emperor Penguins, Increasingly Under Siege by Climate Change, Proposed as Threatened Species Under Endangered Species Act

Newswise — Woods Hole, MA (August 3, 2021) -- Today, the U. S Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) announced a proposal to list the emperor penguin as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) based on evidence that the animal's sea ice habitat is shrinking and is likely to continue to do so over the next several decades. Proposing a listing of threatened means the animal is at risk of becoming an endangered species--in danger of extinction--in the foreseeable future if its habitat continues to be destroyed or adversely changed.

Montana wolf laws prompt Endangered Species petition

Town Crier “Briefs from the Region” (1) – 8/3/21. During this year’s legislative session, a series of bills were passed in Montana and Idaho that lengthened trapping season for wolves, allowed baited hunting, approved the use of snares, and more that targeted Montana’s wolf population. As a result, 70 different conservation, animal welfare and indigenous groups have come together to requesting Endangered Species protections for Western wolves. Additionally, Idaho passed a bill that would allow private contractors to kill 90 percent or more of the state’s wolves. “Wolves remain completely absent from suitable habitats or perilously close to extinction in many western states, and the handful of states surrounding Yellowstone National Park are now driving the larger populations toward extinction—endangered species listing—by ramping up wolf killing and stripping away hunting and trapping regulations in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming,” Erik Molvar, Western Watersheds Project executive director told KBZK.
