A former school official on Long Island is facing charges for allegedly scheming with a restaurateur in a million-dollar kickback scheme, federal authorities announced. An indictment was unsealed on Thursday, May 19 charging Lindenhurst resident Sharon Gardner, age 56, the former Director of Food Services for the Hempstead Union Free School District, and Elmont resident Maria Caliendo, age 57, in the scam.

An Elmont home was struck by lightning Monday afternoon, according to fire officials. The incident happened on 51 Circle Drive West at around 4:30 p.m. First responders arrived to smoke coming out of the windows of the second floor, but crews were able to get the fire under control by around 5 p.m.

A firefighter suffered injuries battling a blaze that broke out in a Long Island home that was tied to a nearby lightning strike, police said. In Elmont, first responders were met with thick smoke coming from a second-story window from a Circle Drive West home at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Monday, May 16, according to authorities.

After polls closed in Elmont on Tuesday evening, the $98.5M budget for the 2022-2023 school year was passed. The Elmont Union Free School Distric spending plan will introduce a full-day pre-kindergarten program in all district schools and includes a tax levy decrease of 0.07 percent that would save the average resident $2.28 next school year.
