This Is Where Dune 2021 Was Actually Filmed

Director Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part One" has just been released to theaters and HBO Max, much to the delight of eager moviegoers and sci-fi fans everywhere. With a renowned director (Villeneuve's past work includes 2016's "Arrival" and 2017's "Blade Runner: 2049") and a stellar ensemble cast — including the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem — there's a lot to be excited about with this new adaptation of the classic 1965 Frank Herbert novel of the same name. Set far into the future, the film follows Paul Atreides (Chalamet) and his family as they fight for the control of the desert planet Arrakis, which is the only planet with access to a very valuable substance.

Brave New Words: A Pronunciation Guide to All the Terms in 'Dune'

If you've never encountered Dune apart from listening to nerds talk about how good it is, or how weird it is, or where the film adaptations of the book succeed and fail, you are probably still aware that Dune contains a lot of words. That is, lots of words that are not real, as well as words that are simply unfamiliar to most English speakers, which the characters of Dune mercilessly lob at your eyes for pages and pages until you're not sure which language anyone is speaking anymore.

Everyone in Dune poops their pants

Any cinematic adaptation of Dune has a lot of on-the-page visuals to translate to screen, but the most human of these might be the ever-present stillsuits, garb of the desert-dwelling Fremen tribes. Stillsuits are less a product of fashion, and more of necessity. The climate of the planet Arakkis is...

DUNE (2021) – Review

So, even though it’s the season of the big somber serious “award-bait” films, who’s ready for a journey back to “a galaxy far, far away”? Whoa, shut down the “hyper-drive”, I’m not talking about that one, y’know the one we all first visited back in 1977. Although we’ve been, cinematically, in this particular “star system” before. First at the movies in 1984, then on basic cable TV in 2000. It’s based on a book series with a huge fan base, although neither version pleased them (as for the 84 “take”, if you catch it on TV, the director credit is for “Alan Smithee” as the acclaimed filmmaker doesn’t want his real name on it), nor did it attract a throng of new admirers. Perhaps film tech needed to catch up to the tale’s unique requirements. Or maybe it just needs the correct director and cast. Now we can see if all three are needed for the proper screen treatment of Frank Herbert’s DUNE.

Dune 2021 film review: The spice must flow, but it stops abruptly

I left my first screening of Dune (2021) convinced that I would watch it again soon. For a film that spends much of its time in a barren desert wasteland, Dune's cinematography consistently dazzles. And despite a sizable cast of seemingly important characters, Dune does a good job establishing empathy and likability across the board—without losing the story's thread. Lead actor Timothée Chalamet also comfortably surmounts whatever massive expectations series fans might have about the Dune universe's latest "chosen one."

‘Dune’ Hits $76 Million at International Box Office

Moviegoers, at least at the international box office, have kept the ticket sales flowing for “Dune,” the big-budget reimagining of Frank Herbert’s landmark sci-fi novel. The movie, directed by Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival”), brought in $26.3 million from 32 overseas markets in its second weekend of release. It has generated $76.5 million to date, a solid tally given that many parts of the international box office have been slow to recover from COVID-19. However, the Warner Bros. and Legendary film cost $165 million to produce, meaning it will need to generate nothing short of a tidy sum in theaters to turn a...
