Ferndale boys basketball star Jason (Deuce) Drake has decided to sign with Cleveland State for his college hoops. Drake was deliberate in the recruiting process, waiting until the final hour of his senior year to pull the trigger. Ironically, Drake displayed one of the quickest shot-releases in recent memory. He chose Cleveland State over Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Toledo, Bowling Green, Purdue-Ft. Wayne, Northern Illinois and UW-Wisconsin.

Goodrich is the new No. 1 team in the state. And there’s a perfectly good explanation why. After extending its unbeaten streak to 29 games to start the season, Goodrich finally ascended to the top spot in Division 2 in the newest state rankings from the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association. The Martians supplanted Forest Hills Eastern at No. 1.

Regional champions were determined in the WIAA Girls State Softball tournament Thursday but several regional finals had games postponed by rain that will be played Friday. In Division 1, top seeded Kaukauna defeated Kimberly 7-0 to advance to next week’s sectional semifinals where they will face 5th seeded Ashwaubenon, a 10-0 winner over Appleton North. In the other half of the bracket is second seeded Hortonville, a 13-3 winner over West De Pere. The Polar Bears will face Green Bay Preble which advanced with an 11-1 victory over Pulaski.

Next week’s Division 2 individual state tennis tournament will have its fair share of competitors from the Chippewa Valley. Altoona’s Dan Harris and Regis’ Alex Erickson are both headed to the individual state tournament in singles. They punched their tickets at Thursday’s sectional at the Menard YMCA Tennis Center.
