The Mandalorian is back, and with it a reason to open Disney Plus again

If you haven’t opened your Disney Plus app since The Mandalorian ended in December 2019, you’re not alone. It wasn’t long after The Mandalorian’s first season ended that op-eds and tweetstorms started to appear decrying Disney Plus as an empty wasteland. Sure, The Simpsons was available to stream, but when it came to opening the app daily trying to find something new to watch, many people (without kids begging to watch Frozen 2 over and over again) weren’t impressed. Data from third-party firms, including Reelgood and 7Park Data, shows that while The Mandalorian was a guaranteed hit, Disney Plus has dwindled in interest since January. The streamer has also failed to continuously crack Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings in the United States, which are mostly dominated by shows and films on Netflix.

How to watch The Mandalorian season 2 when it premieres

Last October, The Mandalorian became an overnight phenomenon, launching Disney Plus to necessary, zeitgeist-worthy heights. But the show also arrived in a cloud of confusion: Between people thinking Pedro Pascal’s character was a version of Boba Fett, those who couldn’t tell the Star Wars TV series from Rise of Skywalker, and those who wondered why Yoda was now a baby, the actual content took some time to connect with the masses. And then there was the schedule and timing — due to Episode IX’s release in December 2019, the rollout was downright wacky.

The Mandalorian season 2 release schedule: what time does episode 1 air?

The Mandalorian season 2 release schedule has been set. Those of you who watched the show week-to-week last year might already be getting flashbacks and Force visions to what a rollercoaster of a ride that was. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ended up interrupting part of the season – while UK fans had to wait several months to officially clap eyes on Baby Yoda.

The Mandalorian is better the less like Star Wars it gets

If you’re looking for some of the wider implications of The Mandalorian’s first season in the new premiere, now streaming on Disney Plus, you’ll probably be disappointed. You’re not going to learn anything about the “darksaber” wielded by Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) or any more about Din Djarin, the eponymous Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) than you already do. His goal this season is straightforward: bring The Child (“Baby Yoda” to everyone online) to its people. And in order to find The Child’s home, Djarin needs to find other Mandalorians.

Disney’s major reorganization is good news for anyone who loves Disney Plus

Streaming was always going to be a big part of Disney’s next phase, but now it’s clear that Disney Plus is truly the company’s future. Disney announced a “strategic restructuring” of its media and entertainment divisions yesterday that position the company to more aggressively meet its audience where they are — at home, streaming shows and movies to their TV. Under the new organization, Kareem Daniel, an executive who oversaw consumer products, games, and publishing, is moving from that division to oversee all of Disney Plus. It may seem odd to place a non-streaming executive in charge of streaming, but the shift seems to signal that Disney wants a less traditional approach to its entertainment and media businesses, with a focus on “delivering and monetizing our great content in the most optimal way possible.”
