Yankees’ Nestor Cortes to play for Team USA in World Baseball Classic

Nestor Cortes’ emergence as one of the better pitchers in baseball has landed him a spot among USA’s best. The Yankees left-hander will represent Team USA in next spring’s World Baseball Classic, MLB announced Tuesday on Twitter. Cortes joins a rotation that only has two other commitments in Cardinals veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright, who was also announced Tuesday, and Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly. The Diamondbacks’ worst contracts: Introduction and honorable mentions

Arizona have made their share of mistakes in the free-agent and associated markets over the years. We were debating exactly where the Madison Bumgarner signing ranked on that list of desert follies, and I decided to dig through history and see where exactly Mad Bum might rank. To come up with an objective measure, I looked purely at the cost of the contract and the production over its length. MLBPA keeps Clark, extends executive director through 2027

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Major League Baseball Players Association has voted to extend the contract of executive director Tony Clark through 2027. The 50-year-old Clark — who had a 15-year big league career, mostly with the Tigers and Diamondbacks — helped broker the players’ current labor deal with MLB. After several contentious months of negotiations, the MLBPA and MLB agreed to the new deal in March, which saved a full 162-game season. The MLBPA confirmed Clark’s extension on Tuesday. The five-year extension means Clark is in position to lead the players through their next deal, too. The current contract is set to expire after the 2026 season.

The Nationals made their first major league acquisitions of the offseason today, signing free agent Jeimer Candelario to a one-year deal to add an experienced third baseman coming off a rough season to a lineup that needs plenty of added production, then signing power-hitting outfielder Stone Garrett to a major league deal.
