Diablo II: Resurrected

Where do I even start with Diablo II: Resurrected? Unfortunately for its creators at Blizzard and developers at Vicarious Visions, the answer isn't "the game." We have to hash some other stuff out first, and I appreciate your patience with this, because no review of Diablo II: Resurrected (now live for $40 on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch) is complete without an explainer like this at the outset. (Should you not need the refresher on Activision Blizzard's recent woes, skip to the section titled "Delivering good work in a bad era" and start there.)

The release of Diablo 2: Resurrected is almost upon us (here's when it unlocks in your time zone), and enterprising fans have already extracted models of some of its enemies. In the video above you can get up close and personal with a siege beast, frozen horror, the three barbarian ancients from the end of Lord of Destruction, the dark wanderer, Baal, Diablo, and *spoilers* the Cow King, who now wears a fancy hoof-ring and sure does have some detailed udders. It was somebody's job to model those udders.

Diablo 2 Resurrected Tips: What You Should Know Before Playing

Diablo 2: Resurrected brings back the classic action-RPG for modern platforms, and while it's gotten a visual overhaul and some other quality-of-life improvements, it's a largely faithful remake of a two-decade-old game. As such, you can expect it to generally be less friendly to players than Diablo 3--if that's your only exposure to the series thus far, prepare for Resurrected to tell you a whole lot less, kick your teeth in, and then make you walk--not run--away because you've run out of stamina.

The RetroBeat — Diablo II: Resurrected readies for launch during a dark time at Blizzard

How to check Diablo 2: Resurrected server status

The Diablo 2: Resurrected launch has been shaky, with players reporting issues creating lobbies and temporarily having their characters deleted. Everything we know about Diablo 2: Resurrected

After 20 years, the action role-playing hack-and-slash icon Diablo 2 is getting a modern remaster with Diablo 2: Resurrected. Diablo 2 was a groundbreaking RPG when it was first released back in 2000, has influenced countless titles since, including sequels. This remaster will toe the line between a worthwhile modern remaster and the preservation of a classic — the game is expected to add updated graphics, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, and make some key quality-of-life improvements, but the plot and gameplay should feel true to the original release.
