Medical Matters Every year in Ireland, there are approximately 2,500 out of hospital cardiac arrests, with a rising proportion of cases that occur outside the home having CPR performed by bystanders. The cardiac arrest of the Danish footballer Christian Eriksen on live television has highlighted the importance and success of rapid CPR and defibrillation. Indeed,…

Annually, over 400,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) occur in the United States (US) with a survival rate of only 10%.1 Reasons for high mortality include lack of access to care and medical equipment. Bystanders may not have the training to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the average emergency medical services (EMS) response time may vary depending on location, approximately 8 minutes.2 Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) can increase survival rate to 40% when available.3 For every minute without CPR and defibrillation, survival decreases by approximately 10%.3 So, what if there was a way to deliver AEDs to OHCAs?
The different types include AED(Automated External Defibrillators), Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (WCD). Out of all, AED(Automated External Defibrillators) is one of the handy defibrillators one can keep at home. There is a lot to know about AED, which we shall discuss further. When is an AED needed?

Defibrillator Market: Industry Analysis, Devices, Companies and Competitive Landscape by DelveInsight
Defibrillation is used for patients suffering from life threatening conditions which affect the heart’s rhythm such cardiac arrhythmia, ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia. Defibrillators help in delivering an electrical shock or send an electrical impulse to the heart, thus causing depolarization of the heart muscles and maintaining the normal conduction of the heart’s impulse. They can also be used to restore the heartbeat incase the heart stops functioning.
