Charles Taze Hutchens Jr.

Charles Taze Hutchens Jr. of Crab Orchard, WV passed away at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley on Thursday, October 21, 2021. He was born at Beckley, WV on February 20,1953. Mr. Hutchens took great pride in his work, having worked as an accountant, welder, coal miner and as a union carpenter. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Taze Hutchens Sr. and Teresa Sims Hutchens. Mr. Hutchens loved his children and grandchildren dearly. He had two daughters Tara Workman of Gassaway, WV and Lydia Hutchens (Paul Linkswiler)of Beckley,WV. Surviving also are three granddaughters, Olivia Hutchens(Michael Kopfer)of Beckley, WV,and Alexandria and Samantha Linkswiler of Summersville, WV; a great grandson Wade Kopfer; his two best friends, Greg Ashley and Bill Burleson. A Memorial Gathering in his honor will be held at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, WV on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 from 5 PM until 7 PM. Artie B. (Beaver) Farris, 53 of Lancaster, formerly of Crab Orchard, Kentucky passed away Friday, October 15th, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Hospital, Danville, Kentucky. Born April 19, 1968, in Stanford, Kentucky the son of Connie Hoeck Farris and the late Artie G. Farris. He became a truck driver at the age of sixteen. He was self-employed for many years. Beaver was an employee of Jenkins & Orange Paving Company. He was a faithful member of the Crab Orchard Church of Christ. He enjoyed fishing, shooting skeet, and watching NASCAR racing.

Lewis “Lew” Laflin, 88, of Crab Orchard, Nebraska, passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Beatrice, Nebraska on October 17, 2021. He was born to Lewis and Maree (Shiek) Laflin on January 3, 1933 at Crab Orchard, Nebraska. Lew grew up in Crab Orchard on the family farm, where the Laflin family homesteaded in 1857. The family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where Lew graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950 and then graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1954. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and participated in the ROTC program and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United State Army upon graduation.

Charlotte Ann Janney, 87 of Crab Orchard passed away Friday, October 15, 2021. Born April 27, 1934 in Lillybrook, WV she was the daughter of the late Byron Oliver “Hobb” Williams and Valma Annie Rylant Williams. Charlotte was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church and was a secretary for the school system. Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Janney. Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Kevin Janney and Keith Janney; daughter-in law, Diana Janney; grandchildren, Madison Bell and husband Charles; great-grandson, Zev Isaac Bell. Lew Laflin, 88, of Crab Orchard

Lewis “Lew” Laflin, 88, of Crab Orchard, Nebraska, passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Beatrice, Nebraska on October 17, 2021. He was born to Lewis and Maree (Shiek) Laflin on January 3, 1933 at Crab Orchard, Nebraska. Lew grew up in Crab Orchard, Nebraska on the family farm, where the Laflin family homesteaded in 1857. The family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where Lew graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950 and then graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1954. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and participated in the ROTC program and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United State Army upon graduation. While attending the University of Nebraska, he met the love of his life, Virginia Reavis and the two were joined in marriage on October 3, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Falls City, Nebraska. They recently celebrated 67 years of marriage. To this union three sons were born, Mike, Mark and John. Shortly after their marriage, Lew was stationed in Mannheim, Germany, where they lived two years. While in Germany, Lew served in the 3rd Armored Field Artillery Battalion.

The New Life Tabernacle in Crab Orchard put together the idea when a few children who had type 1 diabetes joined their congregation. Last year they held their first diabetic trunk-or-treat and saw a huge success.
