(CNN) — Columbus Day has been a political lightning rod for states, cities and municipalities around the US for years now. Some have decided to do something about it. A number of states have moved to officially observe Indigenous Peoples' Day, or some version of it, instead -- a holiday to recognize the native populations that were displaced and decimated after Christopher Columbus and other European explorers reached the continent.

Here’s what’s open and closed on Columbus Day 2021

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Columbus Day will be observed Monday, with government offices and schools among those that will be closed for the controversial holiday. The Columbus Day Parade is returning to Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood after taking a pause last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. The parade will start at noon Monday along Mayfield and Murray Hill roads, and it will feature floats, marching bands and local artifacts, according to a news release. Before the parade, Mass will be held at Holy Rosary Church at 10 a.m.

Columbus was commissioned by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to find a faster route to Asia, and instead “discovered” what is now known as North America.

CLOSURES IN EFFECT FOR COLUMBUS DAY

Today is Columbus Day, and as such, there are several closures in effect. Federal and state government offices are closed for today, along with some local government offices. County and district courts are closed for the day. There will be no regular mail delivery, but express mail delivery will continue. Post offices are closed.
