Leading From the Pulpit

The preacher should live as a preacher, watching his life and doctrine. The preacher should also labor as a preacher, giving himself to the hard work of prayer and the ministry of the word. And the preacher should lead as a preacher. The pastor is often judged by the work...

One Another

Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way. — Colossians 3:15-17, The Message.

LYNN JONES: Are you a quitter?

I once heard of a man who applied for a job, and on his resume, he listed the places he had previously worked. Later, when he checked back with the place where he had applied for a job, he was told that when they had checked his references, they were very disappointed. In all three of his previous jobs, he had been fired. The man at the company asked, “What do you think that shows about you?” The young man said, “Well, I’ll tell you one thing it shows. It shows that I’m no quitter.”

Metaphysics: Witchcraft, a Misuse Of The Mind

In the words of beloved Reverend Ike: "When you don't know how to relate to your mind, your mind becomes a witch." The real witchcraft is negative thinking. It's a misuse of the mind's power. That's the trick many people have fallen for! They think of witches as old cat women with fast brooms. That makes me wonder how many heart attacks there would be if everyone had functioning eyes. Why? Well, wouldn't you get shocked to enter your bathroom, take a look in the mirror, and see an owner of a fast-flying broom?

The Bible Project: Thessalonians, Timothy, Titus

Week 47: Colossians, 1, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy 1-2 1, 2 Thessalonians: These epistles are distinct as they are primarily positive in their message. Paul instructs the church to continue in its faithfulness (1 Thessalonians 5:14-22). He encourages them to endure persecution (2 Thes 1:4-10, 3:1-8). He directs them to continue in sexual purity (1 Thes 4:1-8) and to continued spiritual growth (1 Thes 4:9-12, 5:23-24). Finally, they are to look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the return of Jesus when all things will be made right under His leadership (1 Thes 4:13-18, 2 Thes 2:1-12).

The Knowledge Of God’s Will Working In Our Life

“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9-10). Many Christians go through life constantly seeking God’s will for their life, not realizing that if they’re living a life that’s pleasing to God they’re probably in God’s will. Christians need to remember that God doesn’t make cookie cutter Christians; God doesn’t make all Christians with the same intellectual, emotional, and physical abilities. “Having gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them” (Romans 12:6). God has a specific purpose for every Christian.

Today’s Devotional: On Seeing God

Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. (Colossians 3:11) The Bible is the story of God’s ever-progressing self-revelation. God wants us to see the whole picture, or at least a bigger and bigger part of the picture. But we can only start to see once we give up believing that we have the whole truth already. To see, we must listen as though we don’t have all the answers yet.

Reflections on the Risen Life Part 2

It was Philip Yancey, who, when asked about the difference between disciples in the United States and China had this to say:. At my church, when something bad happens, people immediately ask God to fix it: get me a job, heal my aunt, whatever … In China, though, I heard different prayers, not “God, take away this burden,” but “God, give me the strength to bear this burden.”

God’s Word For Today: You Are Made Worthy By The Blood Of Jesus

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,” Hebrew 10:19. “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” Colossians 1:19-20.

Prayer To Stand Strong as You Persevere

Heavenly Father, I take courage that while I persevere with the tasks ahead and as I wait for directions from the Holy Spirit, I will rejoice and give You thanks and praise. No weapon that the enemy throws against me shall prosper. Every tongue that rises up in judgment will be condemned in the name of Jesus! Nothing will separate me from Your love.

Taking Time to Focus on Your Finances

When we feel unhealthy, we reconsider our eating and fitness habits. When spiritually depleted, we pray and read the Bible. When our houses are dirty, we clean them. How about when our finances need attention?. I suggest having financial focus times. Take a few hours every few months to review,...

The Love of the Present World

Neil Postman warned in the foreword to Amusing Ourselves to Death that it is not what we hate that will ruin us but rather what we love. The far more dangerous situation is a culture that seeks out pleasure and ease at all costs, even when that cost is their freedom. This is the danger into which Paul’s fellow worker Demas fell.

This Month’s Theme: Christ in You, the Hope of Glory

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Christmas is a time to remember Jesus. Unfortunately, it now seems to have become more of an excuse for seasonal food, gift-giving, and family gatherings. At least, this was the case for me before I met Jesus for myself.

Step 11, month 11 in path to recovery

Sater: ‘Let the word of God dwell in you richly’. The serenity prayer is a key focus in Celebrate Recovery, because after all, God is involved in every step of the journey to recovery. Words of Grace

There are many things going on in the world. Some of the things are important, and some of the things are not important. Someone has said that we sometimes miss our opportunities in life because we concentrate on the trivial and neglect the most important things. Jay Peden remembers a...

Do you have the Word of God inside you?

Gatorade introduced the slogan “Win from within,” calling for one’s inner drive to be the best there is. The question asked was, “Is it in you?”. Well, is the word of God in you so that you will be the very best in living a life for Christ?. When something...

Let There Be Light

Genesis 1:1-5, Psalm 104:1-4, John 1:1-5, John 1:9-10, John 1:14, Colossians 1:15-20, 1 John 1:1-4 I had fallen down a rabbit hole. All I did was search “best light bulbs” on my phone. Thirty minutes later I was still standing in the home improvement store’s lighting aisle analyzing online recommendations. Did I want incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, CFL, or LED? Had I considered lumens, watts, or Kelvin numbers? Was I going for daylight, soft white, warm, or cool? It dawned on me (pun intended!) that we are a people obsessed with light.

Advent Is Not Christmas, but Christ’s Arrival Is at Its Center

The first foundational principle of the Word on Fire movement is “unwavering Christocentrism”: that is, to have our Lord Jesus Christ at the center of our lives, of everything that we do. As St. Paul said to the Colossians, “As therefore you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so live in him, rooted and built up in him” (Col. 2:7).
