Got my first taste of the $55 million end zone project and club seats at Appalachian State on Saturday. Bonus: Field access behind the end zone before and during the game. I can see why these premium spaces are selling so well nationally. Bama-Florida delivers big number for CBS in...

NIL Opens Up A Whole New World For College Athletes — And Their Data

This generation of college athletes is more tech saavy than any other in history. They are used to 24-hours-a-day access from their friends, family and coaches. Perhaps their parents installed an app on their phone that geo-fenced the area they were permitted to travel in, or had a car that notified the owner when it was being driven too fast. Their teammates may be outfitted with WHOOP tracking devices while their coaches have them track everything they eat.

A QnA about the potential impact of group licensing in the NIL era

Malaika Underwood, a former college athlete who is the senior vice president of licensing for OneTeam Partners, has emerged as one of the leading voices in the new NIL era. In 2019, OneTeam launched as a joint venture between the NFL Players Association, Major League Baseball Players Association and RedBird Capital Partners to maximize the value of athletes’ rights. The mission of OneTeam in the college NIL space is to bring the group licensing model to campuses nationwide. Group licensing enables athletes to receive compensation for co-branded products — jerseys, trading cards, video games, etc. — that incorporate their NIL as well as the school’s trademarks and logo.

Brands and platforms are courting college athletes to sell products

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that NCAA athletes could profit off of their name, image and likeness — often referred to as NIL — for the first time. Ever since, brands and startups have rushed to court college athletes to engage in endorsement deals and to launch their own products.

Raleigh unite one NIL deal after another | Sports

Last year has been a tough one for everyone in the Raleigh area. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, NC State and the surrounding area were separated from each other. Since the summer everything has been back to normal, the school term is in full swing and Raleigh is back to business as usual, but the college sport will never be the same.

Who Are the Highest-Paid Public Workers in America?

A demand-supply gap is making college sports coaches the highest-paid public officials in America. Sports money makes the world go round. Just ask LeBron James, Serena Williams, Cristiano Ronaldo and many other athletes around the world whose annual net worth is beyond the wildest dreams of most of us. But even beneath that pantheon of superstar athletes, other sportspeople are raking in huge sums. That roster includes college coaches who nurture many talents to stardom.

Breaking the cycle of shame about mental struggles in athletics

Long before sports superstars Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles braved the spotlight to defend their mental health, Graig Chow, a certified mental performance consultant at UC Berkeley, studied the culture that pushes elite athletes like NBA players Chamique Holdsclaw, Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan to their breaking points. What he...

2021-22 Player Preview: Ben Gregg

In Keith’s recent profile of Julian Strawther, he mentioned the second year jump we can anticipate from the Zags guard. The same type of case can be made for Ben Gregg, except it’s a little different. The 6-10 forward is entering his first full season in Spokane, not something you hear much regarding college athletes. But thanks to his early graduation and early enrollment in 2020-21, Gregg was able to get some valuable experience within the program as they made their Final Four run. Gregg still has his freshman eligibility as well, thanks to the extra year given by the NCAA due to COVID. So what can we expect from him in year 1.5?
