Victims Identified In Deadly South LA Suspected Drunk Driving Crash

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – The coroner’s office Monday identified the 43-year- old man and 26-year-old woman killed when a suspected drunk driver allegedly triggered a two-vehicle crash on the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway in South Los Angeles. The crash occurred at 4:40 a.m. Sunday at Slauson Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported. The driver and passenger of a 2014 Hyundai Elantra were killed as a result of a broadside crash with a 2017 Buick Regal, CHP officials said. The driver of the Hyundai, Mario Mazariegos Rivera, and his passenger, Stephany Cartagena-Bronfield, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Buick’s driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. He was later identified as 30-year-old Warnervee Walton. Walton was the lone occupant inside the Buick. The people involved in the crash were all residents of Los Angeles. The CHP’s Central Los Angeles area office urged anyone with information regarding the crash to call it at 213-744-2331. Pediatricians Concerned About Rising COVID Infections Among Children In Orange County

Travelers Stranded At LAX After Spirit Airlines Flights Are Canceled

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Stemming from a problem that began over the weekend, hundreds of Spirit Airlines flights were canceled nationwide Monday, leading to issues with dozens of arrivals at Los Angeles International Airport. Spirit says the delays and cancelations were caused by a series of weather and operational problems. Spirit customers are asked to check their emails and flight status before heading to the airport. “We’re working around the clock to get back on track in the wake of some travel disruptions over the weekend due to a series of weather and operational challenges,” Hofmeyer said in a statement. “We needed to make proactive cancellations to some flights across the network, but the majority of flights are still scheduled as planned,” Spirit Airlines spokesman Erik Hofmeyer said. According to FlightAware, Spirit Airlines has canceled 313 flights on Monday, 40% of its scheduled flights, and 210 flights have been delayed., American Airlines is also experiencing some issues with more than 500 flights have been canceled. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – University of Southern California receiver Bru McCoy has been suspended from team activities following his arrest last month on suspicion of domestic violence, according to media reports. McCoy’s arrest was first reported by the website 247Sports, and the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the football player was taken into custody about 5:30 p.m. July 24 on suspicion of “intimate partner violence with injury,” but did not release further details. Public Health Officials Lift Warnings For Certain LA County Beaches

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Public health officials on Monday night lifted a warning for certain L.A. County beaches. The warning was issued last week in response to testing that showed bacteria levels exceeded state standards. Officials warned of swimming, surfing and playing in the water around discharging storm drains, creeks and rivers near Dockweiler State Beach at Ballona Creek (near Dockweiler Tower 40); and the Culver Boulevard, Imperial Highway and Westchester storm drains. The impacted beaches were as follows: El Segundo Beach Grand Avenue storm drain (Near Dockweiler Tower 60) Dockweiler State Beach Ballona Creek (Near Dockweiler Tower 40) Culver Blvd storm drain Hyperion Plant outfall Imperial Highway storm drain (Dockweiler Tower 56) Westchester storm drain World Way extension The advisory was also lifted Monday for Santa Monica Beach at the Pico-Kenter storm drain; and Topanga Canyon Beach at Topanga Canyon Lagoon in Malibu. One Dead In Diamond Bar Crash On 60 Freeway

DIAMOND BAR (CBSLA) – A 20-year-old man inside a stalled Honda Accord was killed and two other men just outside the car were injured Saturday when the vehicle was rear-ended by an SUV in the carpool lane of the Pomona (60) Freeway, authorities said. Officers responded at approximately 3:04 a.m. to the eastbound 60 Freeway just east of Grand Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported. A 2019 Nissan Armada was driving at an undetermined speed when it rear- ended the Honda, killing the victim inside the car. The Compton resident was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda, a 21-year-old man from La Puente, suffered major injuries and another passenger, a 20-year-old man from Los Angeles, suffered moderate injuries. Paramedics rushed them both to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. They were just outside the Accord at the time of the crash, authorities said. The 44-year-old Moreno Valley man driving the 2019 Nissan Armada that crashed into the Accord suffered major injuries and was rushed to an area hospital. Heat Advisory In Place For Northridge-Chatsworth
