Our response to God’s love and salvation

Luke 1:1-14, 4:14-21 The Book of Nehemiah furnishes the first reading for this weekend. Although some Old Testament books tell the history of the people of Israel, mentioning many aspects of life, such as famine, plenty, disease and war, all are chiefly concerned with inspiring God’s people to be faithful, but also eager in their religious practice. In this reading, Ezra, who was a priest, called together men, women and children old enough to comprehend precisely to this end. He admonished this gathering to listen carefully to the Scripture.

The Church Is Still Recovering from This 20th Century Mistake

I’m a traditionalist when it comes to church. I love being among God’s people, opening his Word, praying, and singing together. I love seeing lives changed, burdens lifted, and needs met in the body of Christ. But I’m beginning to see a big problem—one that started decades ago....

Gorsuch Wanted Supreme Court To Overrule Virginia Courts On Real Estate Tax Issue

Clergy housing is back in the news as Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch dissented from the Court’s decision to not hear the appeal in the case of Trustees of the New Life in Christ Church v. City of Fredericksburg, The economic issue was real estate tax exemption for a residence on Church property occupied by Josh Storms and Anacari Storms. The real estate exemption turned on whether Josh and Anacari can be considered ministers under the Virginia statute that exempts parsonages.

Religion column: Working for unity and peace in a divided world

"My prayer is … that all of them may be one.” — Jesus, John 17: 20-21 This is the “week of prayer for Christian unity” between the Catholic feasts of Peter and Paul (Jan. 18-25). An Episcopal priest conceived the idea, since Peter and Paul disagreed in the early church. Franciscan friars at Graymoor, New York, have promoted unity for more than a century.
