If it weren’t for the predictions weather forecast Sochi weekend would seem broadly already written for the first two places on the podium. One of the last fiefdoms Mercedes in dry conditions, an extremely congenial territory is confirmed for the Brackley team, which dominates the first day of the Russian weekend far and wide. For those who do not know i MIG are the Russian war fighters, propelled by jet engines and since some improvements in reliability have enabled Toto Wolff’s engineers to increase the average power delivered, we continue to see the power units of the star freshly squeezed since Friday. Sochi is no exception, quite the contrary. Looking at the data the dominance of the W12 is as clear as simple. The Russian track, unattractive and spectacular, is one engine track. The curves, almost all at 90 degrees, do not constitute a particularly complex obstacle in the search for the longitudinal aerodynamic balance of the cars, and the longest and “different” curve of all, curve 3 is actually addressed full as if it were a straight. This causes the challenge between the cars to become a question of mechanics of the vehicle, although not particularly selective in turn, of efficiency And especially power. All stages of traction exiting the curves are very similar to each other and require a particularly efficient medium delivery, and the two long straights, the main one and the rear one, are the ideal test bench for the complete unloading of the hybrid part and for the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle.

F1 / A highly loaded Russian Grand Prix |

Friday’s free practice in Sochi provided little feedback for the race. All in all Mercedes appeared well balanced and competitive right from the start, but the typical approach of the reigning champions also weighs on the chronometric feedback, with aggressive use of the power unit since Friday, a decidedly influential factor on the long straights of the Russian racetrack. Max Verstappen will also start from the bottom of the grid to replace the power unit, while Sergio Perez appeared in difficulty, elements that increasingly distance the possibility of witnessing a direct confrontation between Red Bull and the Silver Arrows over the course of the weekend.
