Billy Porter criticizes Harry Styles' historic Vogue cover: 'All he has to do is be white and straight'

Billy Porter criticizes Harry Styles' historic Vogue cover: 'All he has to do is be white and straight'. Since Harry Styles' became the first man to grace the cover of American Vogue alone almost one year ago -- and did so wearing a full-length dress -- the British singer has come to symbolize a new, more expressive era of men's fashion. But he's the wrong face for the moment, according to actor Billy Porter, who has built a reputation around his gender-fluid fashion choices.

Billy Porter Made a Statement in Diamonds at the 2021 Emmys … But Will Men Dripping in Diamonds Become a Trend?

Style-setting actresses had some major competition in the bling department during the 73rd Prime Time Emmy Awards: The men turned up shimmering in diamonds from neck to hands. For numerous seasons, we have witnessed the “man brooch” become the jewel to watch for guys on the red carpet. But during the Emmys, everyone from Jon Batiste in Cartier to Billy Porter in Lorraine Schwartz was draped in diamonds. Billy Porter piled on more jewels than any of the women at the awards (and just might have worn more jewels than some serious collectors have amassed over many years). He wore all of the major trends in diamonds—from multiple earrings to wide bracelets to an emerald and diamond statement necklace to fingers full of rings. Coco Chanel’s advice, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off,” didn’t seem to have an effect on Porter’s jewel styling or the black wings that he wore as part of his fashion statement. Porter has worn jewels before, but he outdid himself at the 2021 Emmys. Porter speaks about the importance of diverse representation, and we love that about him. But we think you should go slowly on when suggesting diamonds to men visiting your stores. Many men still think a watch, a bracelet and a wedding band is being overdressed when it comes to jewelry, so we think you can introduce one diamond piece and slowly teach men how to incorporate them into their daily looks. We suggest you start with a diamond accented signet ring, a bracelet or a diamond tie clip or “man brooch” for starters. But we thank Billy for being an original!

How Ryan Murphy inspired Billy Porter’s new movie

American audiences often hear primarily about the struggles that trans people face, in everything from 1999’s “Boys Don’t Cry” to “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” to the nightly news. But Billy Porter tried to show a less familiar side of the trans experience in his upcoming directorial debut — joy.

Billy Porter Opened Up About His Childhood Struggles: "The Impossible Is Possible"

Billy Porter wears many hats: Tony-, Emmy-, and Grammy-winning actor, singer, and fashion icon, but above all else, he is indestructible. Ahead of his new memoir, Unprotected, which comes out later this month, Billy is opening up about how a trauma-filled childhood helped to fuel his art and purpose. In an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning, Billy shared that he never imagined his life unfolding the way that it has, especially as a kid who was repeatedly bullied and beaten by classmates. "I was born queer. I was born gay, and I was effeminate. And it was always the torment, like, having to go to school every day; 'So what's gonna happen today?' Until fifth grade talent show," Billy said to CBS News correspondent Seth Doane. "And then all of a sudden it was like, 'Oh, well, you know, leave him alone — he can sing!' That was my cue. I was like, 'Oh shoot, well, let me sing! Let me keep singing so I can stop getting beat.'"
