A huge piece of California's Highway 1 near Big Sur collapsed into the ocean

(CNN) — A huge piece of California's Highway 1 was washed out this week by a winter storm that brought heavy rain and snow. California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) officials said in a statement Friday a debris flow from the hillside above the roadway "overwhelmed drainage infrastructure, flowed across the highway, and eroded the road resulting in the complete loss of a segment of Highway 1" at Rat Creek, about 15 miles south of Big Sur, a mountainous stretch of the state's central coast.

After rain and debris flows, a chunk of Highway 1 in Big Sur washes away.

About 48 hours after transportation officials preemptively closed Highway 1 through Big Sur, a chunk of the highway has slide under significant rainfall and debris flow. Caltrans and California Highway Patrol reported the slide Thursday afternoon at Rat Creek, which is located on the South Coast of Big Sur, roughly two miles south of the Esalen Institute and eight miles north of Lucia.

BIG SUR – A fierce atmospheric river storm this week washed away a section of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast, about halfway between Carmel and Cambria. Highway 1 to Close in Big Sur Area Tuesday Evening Ahead of Storm

State Highway 1 will close Tuesday evening along the Big Sur coastline in advance of a storm that could cause debris flows and other problems, according to Caltrans.
