Battlefield 2042 has no campaign and no battle royale mode

After a string of rumours, whispers and leaks EA has finally lifted the veil of the latest Battlefield, seeing the flagship first-person shooter moving away from the historical setting of recent entries to a near-future backdrop - with this year's model subsequently called Battlefield 2042. In a break from other recent traditions, it'll also do away with a single-player campaign, and there are no plans for an accompanying battle royale mode.

‘Battlefield 2042’: First Details About the Sixth ‘Battlefield’ Game Revealed

On Wednesday, EA Dice unveiled the first details for the sixth game in the “Battlefield” franchise, including its name: “Battlefield 2042.”. The multi-player first-person shooter will be released for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC on Oct. 22. The new installment will widen the map for “Battlefield’s” largest matches ever, with matches filled with up to 128 players on the new-generation consoles and PCs (Xbox One and PS4 players, however, will be capped at 64 players and reduced map sizes).

As part of this week's E3-like dump of game news and reveals, EA has announced one of its most unsurprising games of the year: Battlefield 2042. But don't get too excited. The word "reveal" should be taken with a grain of salt, as we don't know much about how the game will work—and we expect that EA will tease fans with a slow news trickle until the game's launch on October 22 on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
