Watch Members Of Mastodon, Carcass, Spirit Adrift, & Others Play A Wild Cover Of Metallica’s “Blackened”

Jordan Olds’ great Two Minutes To Late Night video series has brought together a whole lot of heavy musicians to play all-star covers of classic songs, both of the heavy and non-heavy variety. Since the series started in the early pandemic era, most of those Two Minutes To Late Night covers have shown up on Monday mornings. But in recent months, the covers have been a little more conceptual. On Halloween, for instance, Olds played all the instruments in a solo salute to the film scores of John Carpenter. And a few days ago, on Black Friday, Two Minutes To Late Night celebrated the occasion with a new version of Metallica’s “Blackened.”

Members of Mastodon, Carcass and Bad Wolves Join Two Minutes To Late Night In New Intense Cover of Metallica’s “Blackened”

Of all the trends that started at the beginning of the pandemic, one that has continued regularly is the Two Minutes to Late Night cover series. The latest in this series features members of the Grammy-nominated Mastodon, Carcass and Bad Wolves in their version of “Blackened” by Metallica. The buzzing riffs and fast-paced singing of the original song create that unmistakable metal energy, the sound to trigger instant headbanging. Even though this cover plays “the fast parts slow and the slow parts fast,” they still maintain this powerful feeling exuded from the original. In the video, each of the artists plays in their respective landscapes — from the woods to the studio — and shows clips of people cooking and selling blackened fish (including the Gordon Ramsay).

Metal By Numbers 11/12: Mastodon top the charts

Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week. Mastodon absolutely crushed the charts with their eight studio album. Fun fact, this was the first time since 2002’s Remission where Scott Kelly of Neurosis didn’t guest on a track. Also making a surprised impact was Black Veil Brides and their sixth studio album. The charts were favorable for most bands as they saw their albums rise by roughly 10-20%. Returning this week was AC/DC, Vildhjarta, LTE and more!
