Awake review – Netflix’s Bird Box-lite thriller is a real snooze

There’s something so distractingly and, errr, sleepily half-assed about the inert new Netflix thriller Awake that watching it is almost as much of a bore as having to then write about it. Seemingly designed purely to lazily fill the column of “If you liked Bird Box then you should also watch” there’s nothing here that hasn’t been done before and better, a film that lumbers up to the table with completely empty hands.

In Netflix's 'Awake,' the apocalypse is now — and everyone is an angry, narcissistic insomniac

The new Netflix film “Awake” is a story about a desperate mother trying to save her children in the middle of a mental-health apocalypse — in other words, an obvious effort to reproduce the break-out success of Netflix’s enormous 2018 hit “Bird Box.” But a story about mysterious worldwide global apocalypse feels different after the pandemic, and “Awake” takes advantage of that with a hyperconscious focus on the ways in which both the public’s and the government’s reaction to a disaster can be as ugly as the disaster itself.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Awake’ on Netflix, an Apocalyptic Thriller in Which Everyone Goes Nuts Due to Sleep Deprivation

Netflix movie Awake enters the high-concept sci-fi sweepstakes with a premise in which everyone on the planet loses the ability to sleep. Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) gets top billing, under the direction of Mark Raso, helming his second film for Netflix after 2017’s Kodachrome. So on paper, the film has a fair amount going for it, but will it be an all-night rager or just a dullsville yawner?

Gina Rodriguez's Awake on Netflix ending explained

Netflix has become a home for post-apocalyptic thrillers. The latest movie added to this genre roster is Awake, starring Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez. When Jill, a former soldier, discovers her young daughter may be the key to salvation, she must decide whether to protect her children at all costs or sacrifice everything to save the world."

Gina Rodriguez battles endless insomnia in the Netflix sci-fi snoozer Awake

Movies, TV shows, and novels about humanity contending with a sudden mysterious disruptive phenomenon are becoming so commonplace that it might be useful to coin a generic term for such weirdness. Borrowing the title of one notorious example gives us Unexplained Global Happening, or UGH. While characters will speculate at length about an UGH’s origin or nature, no concrete answer generally arrives; the dramatic emphasis is on survival, trauma, or both. Such tales invariably sport a tantalizing what-if? hook that has you eager to know more. It’s the follow-through that’s often shaky.

Book Review: Need Something To Keep You Awake On The Road? 'The Push' Is Just The Thriller

I took a road trip recently—a long road trip—and downloaded a few audiobooks to pass the time. One was The Push, a debut novel by Ashley Audrain. This novel fits squarely in the “mother and child” subset of psychological thrillers. Think We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, or The Room by Emma Donoghue. It’s featured in several summer reading guides, billed as propulsive and un-put-downable. And wow, is it ever.
