Artist Start Protest Petition Against Proposed Torpedo Factory Changes

A Torpedo Factory artist has started a petition to stop proposed changes to the arts-focused building along Alexandria’s waterfront. Some of the proposed changes include putting a restaurant and art supplies store in the bottom floor of the historic building and moving some of the ground-floor studios upstairs. A rooftop observation deck could be added to the building if future structural studies allow for it.

Five things to do this weekend to celebrate Halloween

The month is coming to a close which means it’s time to celebrate Halloween. I fixed my problem from last week with a new Halloween candle set, and I also have my candy ready for this weekend (for me, not the children). Also on my to-do list this week is watching Disney-Pixar’s film “Coco” — a film centered around the day of the dead — also coming up on Nov. 2. As a part of this weekend’s selection of events, there is altar making for Dia de los Muertos, a Halloween celebration at the zoo, a haunted walking tour and more happenings to celebrate Allhallows Eve.

Dia de los Muertos at MKAC: “You are the result of the love of thousands”

The days darken down into the celebration of two major autumn festivals: Halloween and The Day of the Dead. Both emerged from ancient traditions that say this is a time of year when the veil between the living and the dead thins, and souls of the dead can draw near to their loved ones in the living world. For a short while, time is a swinging door that goes both ways, and spirits can cross over and back.
